Is Adele already a legend?

Is she already on the legend league or does she still have something to prove?

Saved the 2010s music industry singlehandedly

You know nothing about music if you think all of her songs are the same.

The word "legend" is thrown way too easily on this website.

Yes. 21 & 25 alone were enough to forever cement her mark on popular music globally.

If she is not a legend, poor ATRL's other faves.

She has way more respect than her peers in the industry. Maybe in ten years she will be a legend, but who knows. It takes time for artists to prove they are "legends", it is not an easy term that you could use in any successful artist.

May be controversial here but - nope

When someone says why she is a Legend, they mention the success of 21 and 25..

is that all it takes for an artist to be a legend? Success?

I know ATRL forgets that non-disputed Legends like Prince, MJ, Madonna, Mariah, are seen as such because they have changed music in some way and influenced generations of artists...

but as someone said, yall really be giving this title like it's candy  at least mention that she succeeded in a time where everything was oversaturated hyperpop music lol..

Exactly since Lana has been doing the same thing yet still only has one hit to her name

:suburban:

Legend is a bit strong but she's definitely a huge icon.  21 was 12 years ago and is still so remembered.

Legends are individuals who have consistently over achieved in their craft but made an impact to move culture forward.  Their work is critically acclaimed, it sells, they tour, it makes money, everyone is happy.

Icons are those individuals who have mastered their craft and in mastering it, have impacted culture and are referenced constantly. There is staying power in being an Icon compared to a legend.

Adele is a legend, the real question will Adele ever be an icon? In 20 years will the new generation of music listen to her discography and be inspired by her contribution?

It's not just the success of these albums. I am baffled when people undermine and undervalue her influence/impact on 2010s music. 21 debuted in the peak of the dance pop/electronic wave of pop music in 2011, when nearly everything topping the charts at the time was about living it up, dancing and partying. Music was fun but rather impersonal to succeed. The theme of pop prior to Adele's peak was maximalist visuals with crazy outfits and party songs

After the success of 21, and particularly SLY, there was a wave of artists succeeding with piano ballads (JGMAR, Stay, When I Was Your Man, All of Me all benefitted from Adele) and the cool thing to do in music after 21 was making more minimalistic songs and visuals that were more focused on being raw and emotional than fun.  There were other artists who also inspired this era of music IE Bruno w/ Doo Wops & Hooligans, Lorde w/ Pure Heroine, etc. but Adele was imo the biggest figurehead of the death of dance pop and the comeback of the focus on singing/songwriting in music that we saw really praised for the rest of the 2010s.

Few people have gone from "she's 100% a legend" to "wait...is she?" faster than Adele.

The problem with the word is that many people seem to think there are only 7-10 female artists in all of music history who are legends. Any other name listed they will try to discredit. So if Adele (one of the 10 biggest female artists ever)  is not on their short list she is not a legend.

Yes. 21 alone would've made her a legend with how she changed the current sound + its massive success, but 25 and 30 have just added to her legacy. I usually don't like thinking anyone under 50ish is a legend, but she's just too powerful :jonny:

Yes, both Taylor and her are legends. If not at this point, they will get there eventually.

Adele's discography has been solid and timeless (sans 30 which I believe will have its moment to shine in the future) to the GP, and public reception to her image have been mostly positive.

not right now, but she will be, just like Taylor.  Too young.  Beyonce is over 40, so she's entered into that arena.

This!

She has sold tons of albums but I don't think she has enough impact music-wise in order to be considered a legend. I wouldn't say her music changed the music landscape or that people was inspired by her to follow that type of sound like many legends did in the past. And if we look at more superficial things, I wouldn't say she has iconic videos / performances / looks either. She's more of a new kind of Norah Jones.
