As a Britney stan in late 20's i expect Gen Z to be somewhat familiar with a hit or 2 by Britney but that's IT. But i've had 3 instances recently that really surprised me. 

 

First i was walking out of an Office Works ( Australian office retail) and a bunch of school girls that looked no older than 12 had a stand outside as school project selling items and had Britney's " Crazy" on their speakers and all were singing along out loud and left me wondering just...HOW?  it was the ALBUM version too 

 

Then i was babysitting a friend's daughters for a few hours and one was 9 years old. She was asking me to put on Olivia Rodrigo for her and then started asking me what my favourite songs were. She didn't know the other artists, but as soon as i mentioned Toxic she immediately said she loved that song and also loves "Baby one more time" . I asked how did she know it and she said it was a popular song. Again i was genuinely surprised 

 

Lastly just yesterday my 10 year old niece was telling me her knock knock jokes. And then asked if i knew who " Britney Spears was" and i enthusiastically said " YES"  then she asked if i knew her song " Oops i did it again" and proceeded to tell me a related knock knock joke about the song. 

 

I genuinely thought Britney was unknown to Gen Z, let alone Gen alpha lol. Is this a sign that the internet is powerful? Or is Britney THAT big of an artist? I mean Oops? Baby one more time? Those are OLD songs now 

All the free Britney thing was big on Tik Tok. That definitely made her at least a recognizable name- face upon the 10-15 years old.

girl I'm 23 and I'm like a Britney encyclopedia. what she managed to do in 10 years has left a timeless mark on the music industry. THAT'S legendary

She was one of the most defining pop starts of 2000's and Internet and streaming gives her a greater push among younger generations. 

2000's music is in general more streamed than the music of previous generations' not just because of timing. 

Her story.

Her music really is a pop that resonates even if "Guilty pleasure"

Her spinning.

I'll give a real answer. Britney's presentation of the entire sound is one of a kind in the sense that she made songs that sound like pure pop (catchy chorus, catchy hook, defining chord progression, usually in a major key unless a balad), but she managed to do it in a way where it isn't self-derivative, parodic, children targeted, etc. She feels earnest in her presentation and that's the biggest key in her success story, in my opinion.

 

Similar sounding songs from that era have the artists acting very... Uh, I guess camp, lol. As someone who didn't grow up with them, N Sync, Backstreet Boys, etc are all fckn lame to me lol

 

There is literally no artist since that does what Britney did (except k-pop but those are all groups and have a slightly different sound)

 

Her 00s discography is flawless. Her voice is extremely recognizable etc

So is this like the MJ ordeal ( obviously just an example) but if you remember back in the mid 2000's MJ was just everywhere for the wrong reasons. Which opened our eyes to his music because he was making headlines almost every week for the wrong reasons. And it was just inescapable. To the point where we became familiar with his songs.

 

The thing is, I've only heard people discuss her music rather than her trouble though. The exposure she's getting regardless, may be in her favour in the end. It's honestly bizarre. How she still is relevant. 

1. Her classics are really big and memorable - transcend generations. ATRLers can say whatever about her music, but it is a fact that is done with a great quality and the melodies etc, are really catchy.
    
2. She has left a lot of iconic moments that keep getting repeated - there have been loads and loads of viral tweets about them, for example (every year)
    
3. New artists constantly mention her, be it inspiration,tributing her or just fangirling over her.
   
    
4. She is just a great artist whose prime has passed. You can't look back on her career (at least prime years) and not admire her. She was THE Pop Star.
   Literally Madonna and MJ have acknowledged her right at the start of her career (when it wasn't common for em')

Her songs are on Just Dance, her songs get covered by other artists, her songs get used in those dancing programs, they get used in tiktok remixes, she gets mentioned by younger artists, people compare songs to her songs, she gets recommended on spotify, etc

 

Britney's top songs on spotify etc are all mega bops too. You know how many times I went onto a random spotify page from an artist I knew nothing of to play one of their other top songs, only to not like the other top songs and to move on, never to think of the artist again? I feel like that legit can't happen with Britney's top songs I mean look at the material:

 

 

if you google "Britney baby one more time", you don't get a photo of her shaving her head, you know what I mean? You're looking at the pipeline in an unnecessarily complicated way

Nostalgia. 

I’m sure that exposure to her music through parents plays a fundamental role in this. Many of my friends play the music we used to listen to to their kids.

I low-key believe gen-alpha I going to bring back 2000s type pop girls back into mainstream. They grew up with kpop and tik tok dancing, fornight dances, Addison Rae, Britney going viral on tik tok, Beyoncé ruling the world, Olivia being the girl for them. 
 

The signs are showing taste will be different from gen-z and the oldest gen-alpha are already in middle school age. They seem more positive and optimistic about life and social compared to gen-z and their music will reflect that. 
 

 

for anyone curious about how gen alpha  acts currently this video sums up pretty well. There some studies also on google that basically talks about this too. 
low-key I think gen-z will up being the black sheep/middle child generation.

I gotta agree with you there. To be honest i can't shake off the fact that we grew up in a world where Britney is SO loved that she's so HATED and trashed at the same time. I don't know how to explain it. It's like everyone knows her and loves her songs but then just gives her TRASH. Again, in a Michael Jackson kind of way. Where people have driven his reputation to the mud but his artistry is so amazing that no one can deny his impact and songs that  everyone has a favorite or 2. 

 

I also agree with the Just dance and her songs being available on popular apps, although im 100% sure none of those children have access to Spotify which makes this even greater. The fact that her songs are only NOW gaining momentum and streams is incredible.

YouTube is the most popular platform by  gen-alpha and they have access to YouTube shorts and tik tok.  YouTube-shorts is dominated by pop culture references. There is literally so many YouTube shorts with millions of views of Britney. many of them listen to music through YouTube. Once majority of them get older Spotify and Apple Music will reflect that.

i mean all the thing made people aware of her so some of them discovered her music, at least the big hits too.  c

 

Also alpha generations are also sons and daughters of people grewing up with Britney as teens and it's not unusually children listen to the music of their parents or parents make them listen the music when they were young.

Watch this video even the little kids talk about YouTube and don’t really check for tik tok as much as YouTube shorts. They low-key drag gen-z and millennials in this video too.

Because Britney is one in the billion people that screams “Star” . She is a star. Thats why she blew up immediately, thats why she is still loved and thats why she was THE BIGGEST HATERS. Everyone recognises her te second they see her. Everyone is a fan. All my faves are her fan. Even my diva fave Mariah is in love with Britney. I think its about her aura. She has that Marilyn Monroe thing that. We will never understand.
