I could have sworn The Card Counter was A24 but apparently it isn't. That movie had Oscar Isaac & Tye Sheridan and yet I couldn't even finish it.

I thought it was A24 too lol. Fantastic movie, though.

    Everything at once

  • just watched the bling ring and needed to mention it here, the first hour being the same thing happening again and again and again

The Whale is quite frankly the worst thing in the history of cinema.

Hong Chau’s a legend for giving a 4 star performance in a half star film.

Right. It's so A24-esque. I'll make sure to finish it one of these days.

no plot, awful acting, zero memorable characters and it was just plain boring sorry i didn't find anything redeemable

just an hour of them partying and casually breaking into a bunch of celebrity houses like there's no security

Hereditary by farrrr, although I know that won't be popular

As someone who self-identifies as an OA24H, I'm actually surprised by how much I found passable when I look through their filmography, I suppose that Men, False Positive, The Whale, Beau is Afraid, and The Vanishing of Sidney Hall are the others that are outright bad

It's literally a true story and the episodic, mood-driven approach was much better than a formulaic, big-budget snooze. And the actors were great - go look up the real people.

Emma Watson could barely make it three lines without her accent breaking :rip: and true or not, it's still really shallow as a satire. Spring Breakers did what it was trying to do

well then the story wasn’t good enough to make a whole movie if it was gonna be that boring or maybe they just executed it terribly, Zola was based on a bunch of tweets and was ten times more engaging than watching people rummage through clothes and jewellery for 90 minutes

like after an hour of showing them stealing clothes, doing coke and partying they did a montage of them stealing clothes, doing coke and partying fff

She literally spoke exactly like Alexis Neiers' weird-ass voice.

But, sorry, I completely disagree. It's acidic, it's hysterical, and it's beautifully self-aware that these stupids kids are completely devoid of moral compasses. They aren't martyrs of their generation, twisted Robin Hoods pilfering the rich and famous: they're just stupid. Stupid kids blissfully unaware of anything around them other than their own material desires. The performances were striking, but the characters are detached for a reason. They represent figures that could be embodied by any impressionable and isolated teen from our generation. Sofia starts with the film with wide-angled shots and a fun adrenaline rush but gradually tightens the frame on the characters and reveals the consequences behind their actions (as well as the fleeting joy that is derived from their manufactured friendships and social media self-promotion).

Eh, I see where you're coming from and glad you got more out of it than me :skull: but still don't care for the approach personally. Its pacing is just not gratifying whatsoever, the semi-plotless stretch of the first hour would've worked better with more entrancing and hazy cinematography (it was giving TV Movie to me sorry), and every time it felt like there would be an interesting scene, it cut to the next part. The characters' background can be "detached" but it just came off like she got her details from the Wikipedia page at best and made do, which felt corroborated by the message. Maybe she accomplished her goal but it was not for me at awllll hated The Whale more tho.
