Both were slaying in 1999. Ricky Martin had a #1 smash with Livin La Vida Loca and Enrique had two #1 smashes with Bailamos and Be With You. But then when I looked at their parent album chart runs I was shocked. How did that happen?

Ricky Martin is an icon from unique voice to his performing style. Enrique iglesias only has faceless spanish hits you heard on radio.

Why is everyone off-topic about the events that happened after. I'm curious why that happened in 1999, not who's more relevant 25 years later 

Also, how did Madonna end up on Ricky's album? That was her first ever ft as far as I know

Both kings.

They sing so much better in Spanish and their music is so much better in Spanish just saying

That's ATRL for you   Few people have an actual understanding of the topic at hand and most are just rushing to post some un-related stale ass 'drag'. 

 

To give some insight however, I was around 6-7 at the time so take it with a grain of salt, but I do recall Ricky being more of a ladies' man phenomenon and sex symbol at the time which probably brought more interest and fans compared to Enrique's boy next door image and casual listeners. 

Those Enrique songs weren't smashes like LLVL, and were payola-ed.  Ricky was a cultural phenom post the Grammys that year, Enrique was a part of that trend. Your average person probably thought those songs were Ricky's.

Tbh I was around at the time as well. Both were pretty huge sex symbols and super beloved by young female fans and casual listeners alike. The fact that RM peaked at #1 and spent 12 weeks in the Top 3, while Enrique didn't manage to reach the Top 30 was a shocker to me. Especially since Enrique had 2 legit #1 smashes. And Ricky only 1, hence more reason to only buy his single as opposed to a whole album

Bailamos spent 2 weeks at #1. Be With You 3 weeks at #1. Both chart runs look very organic. Though I do agree about the cultural phenomenon now that I remember how the press was reporting on the Grammy performance. Still a shocking difference in chart positions. 

 

Britney, Christina, Ricky and Enrique all defined the 1999. All of them managed a #1 album apart from Enrique who only managed to reach #33

How can you score two #1 hits and not even reach the top 30 with the parent album?
