- certified in 23 countries.

- #12 best-selling album of 2012 (IFPI).

- Spawned a top 10 hit on BB, top 10 in 25 different countries, and #1 in Canada, Finland, Hungary, etc.

- A $305m grossing tour ($400m in 2023 dollars).

- x3 Billboard Music Awards.

- Golden Globe.

- highly acclaimed Super - Bowl halftime show.

The album marks Madonna's 30th year in the mainstream music industry at the age of 54. However, we still see it getting the Lotus / Britney Jean treatment.

So, is MDNA a flop or not? Vote!

Madonna is held to such an unfair standard compared to other pop girls    Of course it wasn't a flop. It was a top 15 album of the year and she was in her 50s with no radio support barring S

  • I used 2017 numbers from CM for Madge vs 2021 for Gaga    So Gaga’s AP 5 years in (which u argue is not a flop I assume) sold as much as Madonna’s tragic flop 30 years in? That’s your argume

Yes, relatively speaking. The ticket bundle deal made it seem less so, but compared to her standard, it was quickly forgotten. Masterpiece is one of the only saving graces.

No, it performed better than Chromatica which is considered a success.

It's especially impressive when you consider she was in her 50s and 30 years into her career.

Yes, but, and I think the majority would agree that at least it gave us one of Madonna's greatest songs - Give Me All Ur Luvin'

Edit: Oh and who can forget "I F* Up"

There was no ticket bundle outside of the US though.

UK - 150,000

Brazil - 125,000

Japan - 110,000

France - 105,000

Germany - 100,000

Italy - 100,000

These are pure numbers.

It even sold 30k copies in Turkey within four days. Is certified x7 Platinum in Russia :rip:

I just knew you were the one who made this thread :rip:

Ofc it flopped.

Week 1 - 359k

Current total after 11 years ~580k

for a 2012 album not great numbers. Not a disaster but it's not a success too.

Also, besides the SB, which happened almost 2 months before the release of the album - she didn't promote it anywhere. She was promoting 'W.E' if anything. :rip:

I mean i agree if the standard is britney jean or lotus it's not that kind of flop.. but it was frontloaded and now every single is totally forgotten. Even where some song got a cute radio airplay.

Actually, that's a 2017 figure so only 5 years after not 11 and it's based on pure sales.

What happened to the rest of the world, where it debuted with 380k sales and sold 1.5m pure (2017 figure too) :gayalipacat5: or do those not count cause they don't fit your narrative?

It did ok with literally zero promo. Also, Masterpiece was the biggest song of 2012 in Russia if I remember correctly :bird:

Are there more women in their mid 50's pulling these numbers? No?

Well...maybe it wasn't.

Context matters.

The only woman in her mid 50's that ever managed a bigger album may have been Cher with Believe...

That is when she stopped caring about the music. It took a huge nose dive quality wise.

How is this relevant to the discussion?

Did I make the argument that it has great numbers?

I mean no one really expected it to be a blockbuster or to spawn huge hits so no. It did fine all things considered
