Flo Milli: what went wrong?

Featured Replies

Flo Milli went from potential female rap superstar back with her debut mixtape in 2019 to an unfortunate debut slump with her 2022 album 'You Still Here, Ho?', released via RCA Records, which was accompanied by a series of reality television skit remakes as the album's central campaign.

The album also featured more mainstream producers including OG Parker (Megan Thee Stallion, Migos), Dr. Luke (Doja Cat, Latto, Saweetie) and Young Fyre (Lil Wayne, Britney Spears).

Despite the creative efforts, the album underperformed, spawned no hit singles and was overlooked on year end lists.

What went wrong?

She’s like Coin Leray - hit and miss. Except on a smaller level lol

She honestly isnt all that talented and comes across too gimmicky. The early Nicki Minaj influences is also too clear with her music. But her album was actually very good. Maybe she just didnt have luck

oversaturated market and no promo, good sis rarely on collab building up profile like other rappers and her image sound is not that stand out to keep release solo songs forever. :katie:

edit: thats a reason why hottie is top 3 on album

Her debut was better, but her YSH,H? was still a solid follow-up, one of my favorite female rap releases of last year. Bed Time and Hottie were constant repeats!

Colorism also plays a role, especially in hip-hop towards non-mixed race Black women of darker complexion, same thing for Doechii, b/c the talent and bops are def there.

I don’t think anything necessarily went “wrong” she’s still a new artist. Doja didn’t really blow up until Hot Pink (her second album, plus she released an EP Purr & mixtapes/SoundCloud). Nicki released 3 official mixtapes, not including her Hood Starz & The Come Up DVD work. That’s 5/6 YEARS of releasing music BEFORE her debut album which was also pushed back. Everyone isn’t going to be like Cardi who blew up after releasing only 2 mixtapes in one year and their first commercial effort being a hit (Bodak Yellow).

It does a disservice to the art of music when we hold new artist to this standard of being a hit maker right out the gate. It takes time to build a fanbase. Flo was like 19 when she first blew up? Nicki started her rap career around that age as well and didn’t become the commercial gyal she is now until 26. I feel like people just discard an artist if they don’t immediately blow up. I think this concept is also hurting artist like Chloe who is actually releasing music, unlike Normani, there’s a difference.

Let Flo be a new girl please. Let her build her fanbase. She literally was just touring sold out shows like relax. Everyone isn’t Beyoncé, who was a hit maker out the gate. I think social media ruined the new artist era. It’s like if you’re not consistently going viral you’re seen as a flop. And there are PLENTY of hip hop songs that are seen as hits in the community that never went top 20, let alone top 40 on the hot 100. We have different rules. Hip hop has always been about the talent first, then the numbers.

Flo Milli, Monaleo, Glorilla, and Lola Brooke all got time. The ship has sailed for Saweetie unfortunately (although she can still be a thriving artist as a singles girl and not an album girl. Saweetie knows how to make a hit song). The ship is about to sail for Bia and Coi, but they are trying. Latto is still debatable. The City Girlz, Megan, and Doja are all good. The CG DO NOT have to be chart topping mamas. Their career is fine. You don’t have to be a chart topper to be relevant in hip hop, this is not pop. Same with Meg, she DOES NOT have to be commercially successful like Doja and Nicki to be relevant in hip hop. Again this is not pop.

Hmm i feel like if you don’t strike while the iron’s got it’s going to be over for you and this applies to Flo more than ever rn. I think BIA can stay afloat if her album is really good. Coi is going to be taking Saweetie’s spot and City Girls have been losing steam too. The oversaturation of the female rap game right now makes the pressure to keep your name out there even more intense before people just forget about you. Flo had 2 big tiktok hits in 2019 and now 3 years later it’s only a small percentage of people that still listen to her.

??? She's only 22 and just getting started. People aren't always overnight successes. I thought we knew this already.

She's still building a following. Not every rap female is going to blow up overnight.

rca fumbled her bag

weak went viral after her mixtape drop and they told her they were sending it to radio....just to never send it to radio

She's very young and bubbling up nicely, but I would like her to send a test song to Pop/Rhythmic:

This sounds like the next "Big Energy" - sized hit to me. Nostalgic/melancholy guitars, a carefree vibe, and an instant slot on the Forever 21 + H&M store playlists.

Nicki a sorti 3 mixtapes officielles, sans compter son travail sur DVD Hood Starz & The Come Up.

Did you translate my post into French? That’s so cool and thank you! People gotta let new artist be new.

RCA is doing nothing for her. Same story with Atlantic and Rico.
