This year will likely be the least viewed VMAs ever. The ceremony is happening tonight and is making next to no noise.  None of the big artists are attending.

 

What is the reason for this? Do you think the music video is dying a slow death? Could it be because the artists of today don’t have what it takes to deliver otherworldly visuals like Gaga, Katy, Rihanna, Beyoncé etc.?

 

Do music videos warrant a standalone ceremony anymore? If they were to be cancelled, do you think another ceremony could ‘adopt’ making music videos a big part of their ceremony, like the Grammys or BBMAs?

MTV and television in general died a long ago. Better performances are served in tours or YouTube so there's no actual reason to have an award show like that anymore

In the time of immediate accessibility through social media no one needs awards ceremony. Mind you, the success those events got in the past was NEVER about the actual prizes, that's just some industry circlejerk moment, it was all about getting to see celebrities and watch them perform. Now that everyone has access to YouTube and spotify and just decides which artist to follow and listen all the time awards shows have become a thing of the past all the minor prizes are just useless,including the vmas. They should cancel them and use those investments to create a single high spectacle yearly event with huge stars and performances

the VMAS don’t actually look at the fans votes though lol.  They just give it to whoever they want 

Award shows in general are dead and it's because of social media. Why go through the whole thing when you can just watch the performances and interviews on Twitter the next day? Not to mention big artists don't even attend anymore....we went from household names like Gaga, Katy, Rih, etc attending them regularly to the attendee list for the VMAs being full of TikTok artists & artists who are mostly faceless to the GP. 

 

The Grammys feel like the only really relevant award show and even then it's not pulling the numbers it used to. It it what it is and I don't think there's really any solution to that. Maybe start livestreaming the whole thing on YouTube?

Taylor is making a surprise appearance though. 

It’s so weird how fast the decline has been.  It’s was only a few years ago you’d get Beyoncé, Taylor, Gaga, Rihanna, Katy, Kanye etc. all in the same room on this night. Aside from the Grammys, it used to be the most eventful night on ATRL in any given year. I guess all good things come to an end... 

Someone on here made a really interesting point that MTV/music videos in general don't hold near the importance or relevance to an artist's success as they did even ten years ago. The days of MTV anointing new stars and hugely influential mv shows like TRL are long gone, and the VMAs are a relic from that era.

No Ava, no ratings

They're just not worth watching anymore, there's no star power, nothing iconic, nothing shocking, everything has been done before, the performances are going to be mid/bad with a few exceptions and the awards will either go to a kpop group or to the only nominee from the category that attended the show

 

I fear the Monsters have been telling the truth all along when they said “no Gaga no ratings” for the past decade. Didn’t the VMA viewer figures only show an increase in 2020 when Gaga finally returned?

 

Yeah, no one watches anymore and this year has made it more clear than ever that the awards are being used for label PR.

The last interesting VMAs was in 2013, almost 10 years ago. I have never heard of half the nominees and performers anywhere for one. No one is going to tune in to see a bunch of irrelevant nobodies. The way I see it, people liked The Grammys for a classier award show but they liked the VMAs for the controversies and wild antics. People are so afraid to be "cancelled" now that they just play it safe and so they act very boring and don't take any risks. It doesn't make for an entertaining awards show. 

You know the VMAs are dead when they're currently airing and ATRL isn't even one bit laggy and unusable

No. They are stupid and only present for entertainment value, there's a sense of self-awareness about that ceremony.

 

Cancel the Shammy's, they're much worse. They shouldn't exist anymore.

Social media killed award shows.

 

Except the MET Gala, which has somehow become a bigger event post-social, everything else is dying/dead.

 

Also haven’t watched it in years, plus I’ll catch the best performances on Twitter or TikTok at some point.

The Met is not an award show, though it is one of the few big events with the Grammys and Oscars.

Honestly I think it's because celebrity culture is kinda dead for musicians, people only care about actors.
