Study finds that 'chemical imbalance' in depression is a myth

There is no evidence of deficiency of serotonin in depression, authors report, refuting a belief held by 80% of the public. The misconception, long invoked as a reasoning for long term use of SSRI medications, has been known for over a decade, critics say, but psychiatrists have not made an effort to formally inform the public.

You all called this man "crazy" for decades, and not only is he hot, but he was also right all along. :deadbanana2:

Xenu King's prophesying of this very thing was just a little too ahead of his time for some people :jonnycat:

Would Duluth news tribune lie?

Edited by infrared

This is old news. The recent news about this are just talking about a comprehensive review article collating multiple findings throughout the years that all come to similar conclusions.

Hopefully this will catch the attention of the GP and help them make informed decisions.

I mean usually people are depressed because there’s something bad going on. Gotta fix your life first. That said if pills work for you have at it.

That was a terrible choice for a source, but it's from Nature.

Everyone knows. Those pills only make you dull and sleepy not happy.

I remember reading a story of a guy who just started going on long walks in the sunlight as was adviced by his doctor... it helped tremendously to reduce his feelings of depression. Same goes for sleeping well, eating healthily, exercising regularly, etc.

People call Tom Cruise crazy because he's a hardcore scientologist.

I was about to say :toofunny2:

The New Study on Serotonin and Depression Isn’t About Antidepressants

A review confirming what has long been known is being used to make misleading claims about antidepressants—and shows the gap between scientific knowledge and public understanding.

Tom Cruise was a wack job and still is. Also saw Tucker Carlson say all hail lord Xenu on his show last night. Hallelujah for uneducated twats!!

Is that John Travolta :bibliahh:

Ofcouse he was right.

There is a pharma industry that is promoting overdiagnosis and even funding research in order to manufacture non existent illnesses so they sell ever more drugs. Scientology was correct to highlight abuses in the world of psychology and psychiatry — I mean we no longer lobotomize people for example, or routinely give the electroshock therapy. Yet once upon a time that was normal and you were labelled crazy and anti science if you had opposed it. Likewise at that time it was religious movements, including cults and specifically including Scientology that opposed these activities.

However the fact that Scientology had been right on this issue, doesn't mean they are right on other stuff and we now have to take lord Xenu seriously.

Unlikely that GPs read scientific journals. They more likely stick to their (possibly sponsored) medical industry sector agitprop.

That is, however, a substantial reversal, given that surveys show 80% of the public believe depression to be caused by a low-serotonin chemical imbalance in the brain, and that "chemical imbalance" reasoning has likely provided the basis for countless treatment decisions as well as years-long use of the medications.

Uhm, who cares what the public believes? The public also believes climate change doesn't exist and the covid vaccine is actually a GPS tracker :deadbanana: Treatment decisions are made by psychiatrists who have known this for many years...
