is the name "monkeypox" problematic?

Featured Replies

I just learned that the monkeypox doesn't even come from monkeys :biblio: so why do we even call it monkeypox? why not humanpox or some other name?

humans can't take responsibility for anything...:emofish: we will never progress as humans if we keep shifting the blame

Spoiler

But seriously, monkeypox are natural to rodents. We already had/have "humanpox", namely smallpox. Humans didn't create both of them so Idk what else to say

Not a single soul on the planet hears "monkeypox" and thinks humans are trying to avoid responsibility by naming it that :rip: it is also named that because it was in fact first detected in monkeys and is normally spread amongst wild animals. Besides all types of viruses/diseases/illnesses have weird names its really not that deep

A group of biologists say that the term is biologically wrong and naming variants after countries is stigmatizing. That's true. It's just called monkeypox because it was first discovered in monkeys and it's easy to name variants with letters and numbers like we do with Sars-Cov-2.

Yes, also as a short person I would like smallpox to be renamed

yes. my neighbor's pet monkey was very offended and upset about it when the outbreak started. i had to throw a whole hand of bananas at her to calm her down.

Eh… sure.

OT: No, it’s the name of the disease. If you choose be obtuse and your life revolves around social “equality” on Twitter then you can feel attacked if you

must.

A visionary. Vision is scary :thing:

Lol some of y'all acting dumb; it's not about it being offensive to monkeys (:deadbanana2:) but about the misguided harm humans can do to the animals thinking it comes from them.
