Back in the day, getting a hit era (huge album and several hit singles - maybe a successful tour) shot an artist to being the most famous person in music or even in general!

 

Examples of that would be the Thriller, Like A Virgin, or Purple Rain era.... after those album cycles were complete, they were shot into another realm of superstardom. So famous to the point where its not even seen in stars of today to reach that level. 

 

 

 

 

 

Now days, there have been several people who achieved a smash era, but they are not what you would consider a megastar. Olivia, Dua, Doja, Post Malone, etc...  Taylor after 1989 is the only recent example I can think of where the era propelled her into a new level of unreachable fame. Does a big era still make artists megastars?

Not really at all these days. Olivia is the perfect example of that, faceless. Just like her cute singles but no real personality/distinction. 

I think these days it's more about talent and consistency, just look at how Katy fell off

Yes, the most recent examples are WWAFA with Billie and Invasion of Privacy with Cardi. Both are household names and people dress up as them for Halloween (a good barometer of being truly iconic). Walk around anywhere with dark glasses, oversized shirt, green and black wig, and people will think Billie. Cardi doesn't have as iconic a look but she herself is mega famous now.

 

I would also say between My Everything and Thank U Next, Ariana was shot into megastardom.

 

"Blinding Lights" and the Superbowl was the final push The Weeknd needed to be a true global household name megastar.

 

Drake was steadily becoming more famous until Views and Scorpion put him in the GOAT category.

 

Olivia is becoming more and more famous, her next album if they play their cards right will probably do the trick. She needs a controversial moment or two, that's what really set Britney apart for example.

 

On one hand, media and music consumption is far more fragmented, but at the same time, the entire planet is online, so if you break through you REALLY break through to everyone globally. Like when Will Smith punched Chris Rock at the Oscars, it became a global water cooler moment instantly.

Katy fell off but between her debut and Teenage Dream she was really really really famous around the world. She was synonymous with pop music for a quick second.

I think Nelly Furtado is an example of this not being the case.

Not necessarily. Meghan Trainors first era was huge but she wasn't really a superstar

not really i mean even someone like ava max who had a giant hit with sweet but psycho and moderate hits with king & queens and my head & my heart plus the motto doing really well is still relatively not famous. it takes more than just having hits i fear

Nope labels don’t make stars anymore. look at all about the bass singer, Charlie puth, Charlie xcx, iggy, lorde, the list goes on

 

 

so far Olivia falls under this category too but she has time to get out of it next era

If Olivia is faceless, then why did she just have a sold out tour, get invited to the White House to promote COVID vaccination, and is still selling nearly 10k physicals a week

Maybe bc now in every country dominate local artists

Iggy Azalea, Megan Trainor, Katy Perry, The Chainsmokers and Sam Smith are proof that having hits and a big album doesn't guarantee mega stardom

I mean nobody is saying she's Madonna, Britney, Gaga, etc. But her era was definitely one of the biggest debuts in recent memories, it's magnitude was completely unprecedented which is a mark of a superstar. I have a feeling her next era will convince you of this, she has a firm grasp of Gen Z and many Millenials.

No. There are tons of one era wonders nobody remembers

I’d say you need a good 3 huge eras to reach megastardom. Abel (BBTM, Starboy, AH), Post (Stoney, B&B, HB), and Ariana (ME, Sweetener, TUN) are good examples.

There's so many eras from the past where the artists had hits but weren't shot to superstardom. You just don't remember them exactly because they didn't reach superstardom.

 

It's true artists like Olivia aren't on the level of Michael Jackson or Madonna but ATRL needs to stop spreading the lie that she's unknown. Like even politicians know he she is and are involved with her
