It is indeed true that the newest generation data centers have excellent WUE, but they still need huge amount of fresh water (!!) to replenish and recover the lost volume. Besides, most investors just prefer the open cycled system ones cause they are significantly cheaper: they don't care if it's gonna destroy an entire eco- and socio-economical local system, they just want to get the highest profit from it.

Now, there are sectors that STILL waste an inexcusable amount of water despite the more efficient resources and methods (agriculture and industries being the prime examples). AI is also important as a scientific tool, cause it helps us manage huge research datasets and deal with complex real-time models. But let's not fool ourselves here: they are getting built so that the big corporations and techs can increase their already insane net profits by speeding up the process of AI replacing human labour

Actual progress is obtained when the whole current and future society, economy and environment are getting benefits from it, not when only a few today and fewer and fewer tomorrow will be

Joking aside, this is an extremely touchy subject for two main reasons. My regional government has just issued a law on how data centers should be built; and it's surprisingly well written! It's basically forcing them to build them in the so called "brownfields" (basically abandoned industrial areas) and to use renewable resources + the almost complete inhibition of using urban fresh water and a 100-200% fee if caught not doing so. Unfortunately, these mfs have already found an escamotage with old energy plants placed nearby canals alimented by rivers and/or rural deepwaters. These canals are a crucial element of our hydrography and hydrogeology, and it doesn't help that climate change and urban intensification have been putting them on an increasing water crisis for the last three decades

One big data center is even getting built 15 kms from my village despite the one hosting them did everything it could to stop them, and it's legit terrifying what these monsters are capable of.

Besides, AI made my mother lose her job and that sudden life change had a huge impact on how she became so obnoxiously close-minded in the last years. These are why I am so excessively resentful asf on this matter nnnn
