BEST OF 2025 (mini-rate)

It's 2025. I believe we haven't done the best of j-pop since... 2015, so it's been a decade. In some way, it's symbolic, as the 'diva' era ended around that time, too. While both Kana and Namie were smashing, and Utada made a respectable comeback, it was obvious that something shifted. So what do we have now? Some veterans still release music, mostly to their fans' content. After a successful comeback last year, Kana Nishino appears to be struggling with making her new singles resonate with the general audience, although she may start serving good music again. The Japanese executive have finally figured out how to make j-pop groups appealing to the worldwide audience. Chanmina has proven to be a competent producer, and her impact on the industry and female rap in particular remains immense. One of the biggest scandals this year involved her without her having to move a finger since other people did the dragging for her. AI is gaining some ground, both in visuals and music. Yumi Matsutoya, one of the most respected musicians in Japan, has released an album where her vocals are AI-generated, having been trained on her own discography, apparently. Whether it is going to inspire other artists is to be seen. Oh, and Perfume have dropped their final album before going into a cryosleep, signaling the end of an era.

Some of these things probably sound bad. I'm not really a fan of where the things are myself. However, I think this mini-rate is a good opportunity for those who aren't attuned to what's happening to decide for themselves whether they like the current state of affairs. We will always have the vast discographies by the divas, but maybe the devil is not so black as he is painted? I understand that some of you may not want to listen to some of the new artists, especially on such a short notice. Still, I encourage you to give it a try.

Oh wow, I had no idea you were working on that! It will be nice to get a better idea of what J-pop is like rn since I, like most, am still stuck on the Heisei era. 20 songs should be a cinch; that's like one Ayu album
