Her voice is cooked omg :mazen:

If she released "Higher" today as a single you'd probably say her voice is 'cooked' too. Y'all just don't like her anymore. She sounds the same as she did in Lift Me Up & Born Again, and on "Anti" but a bit deeper. Same rasp, same tone.

On Higher the rasp is clearly intentional and fits the song perfectly. It's what makes the song amazing tbh. (Her voice was much less damaged on Lift Me Up too.)

Meanwhile here, she tries to sound soft and round but the belt-y parts "Don't ever let anyoneeee" make her sound like your typical heavy drinker/smoker auntie in her 50s. It's just sad really. And if I don't like her anymore, it's because I don't like her recent output. Not because I have some negative agenda against her.

I appreciate all that you've done for the navy, L, but you really don't have to defend her at every given opportunity. Some of us are just more disillusioned than others and there's space for all of us in the fandom. She'll always be my #1 but that doesn't mean I should like everything she puts out right now just because of the quality she served in '05-'16

Well at least you admit it. It's really not about defending her, I definitely thought "Friend Of Mine" was… a choice. When everyone except the 12 'disillusioned' fans she has left on here is praising her vocals on "Anyone", the nature of the critics becomes questionable.

She does not sound any different than she did on Lift Me Up. If anything her voice sounds more mature and controlled than ever. Her head voice in particular sounds perfectly clear, on both tracks she did for Smurfs. Y'all haven't had anything nice to say about her in a minute, but y'all are the "disillusioned", unbiased fans. Ok!

Weren't you trying to defend FOM's repetitiveness by comparing it to We Found Love at some point? :dies:  As if it was FOM's only issue. Anyway...

Plenty of people criticized her voice on Anyone on twitter and in the song thread on atrl - you should know cause you tried to argue with everyone in there as well. But I'm not really sure why does that matter in the first place? Even if you were right, should we allow "everyone's" opinion to dicate our own? If so, then let's go listen to Taylor Swift or that made up k-pop girl group I guess? It's just such a weird thing to bring up, idk.

IN MY OPINION she sounds worse than ever. If I haven't had anything nice to say about her in a minute (which regrettably might be true) it's because she hasn't done anything (music wise) worth praise in a minute. Born Again was the only exception for me, I find it very beautiful.

That was when the first snippet came out and that one insider said the full song was repetitive. I had no idea it'd be repetitive to the point it's just one chorus on loop... lol.

Yes, plenty of *haters* and 'fans' who don't like her anymore have criticized her voice on Atrl and the BeyHive on Twitter as well. Not sure how these qualify as unbiased critics though. They're the same people who've been pushing the theory that she has lost her voice due to smoking and uses IA vocals in her new songs. As crazy as that sounds.

The AI accusations are silly at best but I think it's evident her voice is not at its best. There're a lot of things singers need to do to make sure their vocal chords are in good shape. It's increasingly obvious she hasn't been bothered with any of that since the Anti Tour ended and we all now the woman likes to smoke.

If you don't hear that then there's nothing we can say to each other anymore. Maybe apart from the fact that criticizing the artist I used to admire doesn't make me a hater. Just... disappointed

Born Again is good I agree. It's the only decent song she's released since 2017. People are tired.

Her voice is unrecognisable on Friend of Mine. Whoever produced it should never be let near her again. Why would you make Rihanna's first single in years sound nothing like her by messing with the vocals like that?

Anyone doesn't sound great either but I'm not buying the theory that her voice is cooked due to smoking. She is probably out of practice though because she can deliver a much smoother belt than the one I heard on that song. She defintely needs to get some time with her vocal coach to loosen her vocal chords and come back ready.

I have to say that your never ending defence of her and acting like you're always in the know doesn't help things. Why do even care what Beyonce fans think? You even come for real fans on here. You were almost silent when FOM came out because you were wrong about what that song would be. It was painfully, glaringly obviously as soon as she posted the snippet that the song was going to be repetitive, 75% instrumental and the same vocal on a loop. I said so before the song came out and you immediately jumped to her defence, only for me to be proven completely correct.

Likewise when the London shows were postponed it was so clear to me that she was pregnant again. You again jumped in saying there's no way she's looking to have another baby right now. And again I was correct. This isn't about me being right. It is about you jumping in defending her without being in the know anymore than any of us. You embarass yourself and then go silent. You don't need to jump to her defence sp much.

I am a massive Rihanna fan and would love nothing more than her to come back and give us another album but when she consistently disappoints us we can say so and still be a fan. Lift Me Up is objectively terrible. Believe It was minimal effort. Friend Of Mine is an abomination. There's no point even discussing Anyone because she didn't even release it. In fact I hate the way she's let the Smurfs use sub par, low effort "music" and her legacy as if it's just a way to promote the movie. If she wants to be taken seriously as a voice actor she really should be more selective about how she lets people use her voice. She talks consistently about only coming back when she has something of quality, and yet every side project involving music is low quality, minimal effort trash. I don't care that she's taken time out to start a family or focus on Fenty. But her musical endeavours she has done deserve to be criticised. She could've done a feature per year with a major artist or put some effort into creating quality soundtrack songs. She didn't do it. And if she releases trash songs with unrecognisable vocals, people are going to question her vocals. Only she can disprove that by coming back with a new album.

Not a whole essay dedicated to me.

I should've stopped reading at "Lift Me Up is objectively terrible" though. That song was nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Grammy, won numerous awards, on top of being a solid worldwide hit. Sounds like a quality soundtrack song to me. 'Subjectively terrible' would be a better choice of words. Pretty much invalidates the entire last paragraph of your post.

I've absolutely never pretended to know what "Friend Of Mine" was gonna sound like. I thought the song would have verses, you thought otherwise, and that was a lucky guess on your end. Nothing about the movie trailer or the snippet suggested that the chorus would be the only part of the song. Trailers and Tik Tok snippets only using the hook and hiding the rest of the track is nothing new. I was far from being the only surprised fan when hearing the full thing.

I don't care if you and co. think I'm 'no longer in the know' or still am, or ever was, or wasn't. It's bizarre to point that out and lowkey sounds like jealousy.

The 'real fans' being the ones who take part in dragging Rih in hate threads, or open those threads themselves, mind you. It probably happened when "Friend Of Mine" came out as well but I wouldn't know since I, like you said, went 'silent'. Not because I felt embarrassed that a stranger on a forum guessed something I didn't guess right though. Some of us just have more interesting things to do than spend their free time hating on their favorite artist. I'd rather be criticized for 'always jumping to her defense' than have such loser behavior if I'm being honest.

But you didn't. You jumped to her defence like you always do.

Lift Me Up has the instrumental of an alarm clock. The vocal production and delivery is awful and doesn't suit the meaning of the song. She sounds razor sharp and harsh the whole way through like she is on FourFiveSeconds and BBHMM which suits those angry songs but doesn't suit this one. It should've built to the final "Hold me, hold me" part being harsh/desperate sounding but soft at the beginning.

You dragged me on here before FOM came out for suggesting what the song will be like. If you don't know, let me have my opinion and drag me afterwards if I'm wrong.

The last paragraph is bizarre tbh, I don't care at all if you know stuff or not and am certainly not jealous but don't act like you do when you don't. The conincidence that your silence coincided with her releasing an indefensible song like FOM when you're normally all over anything she does is all that needs to be known. I mean you were embarrassed to defend a trash song nothing to do with anything I said.

Well this is the most HQ version I've heard so far. I like the song for the movie and I think she sounds great, especially love the run she does at 1:06 🥹 melts me every time. Her BG vocals in general and the runs at the end of the song sound beautiful as well imo.

This is what I mean when I say low quality. It's the production. There's really bad pitch correction effect you can hear on certain parts. It sounds like a demo that they didn't have time to refine. Maybe this is why she didn't release it. It's not her vocals because she sounds good in parts.

I can see why they didn't release it. How they have her sounding off key in the recording? :deadbanana2:

It's starting to remind me of Maria starring Angelina Jolie

The dramatics over her voice :deadbanana2:

She literally sounds like her and the raw unprocessed vocals are obviously supposed to make her voice as close to smurfettes. I'm usually the first to call Rih out for disrespecting the navy but I think some of you just need to take the song for what it is :rip:

So anyways... got a DM from Roc Nation last night, her team is planning a '20 Years Of Rihanna' promotion for the 20th anniversary of Music Of The Sun on 8/29. They DM'd several fan pages about it.
