It's an indicator of song discovery and GP interest, how many people are trying to actively seek out the song after hearing a snippet somewhere (radio, TV, etc.)

Apparently radio hosts also check these charts to see which songs people are interested in. So a higher position on the Spotify charts can in some cases lead to more plays on some radio stations
