BuzzAngle to challenge BB/Nielsen

Penske Media Corporation (PMC) – owner of Variety and Rolling Stone – is showing signs that it’s ready to mount a real challenge to Nielsen/Billboard’s duopoly of the US charts.

That’s the inference, anyway, in the announcement that PMC has made a strategic investment in respected US-based data and charts provider, BuzzAngle Music.

BuzzAngle’s analytics and song/stream/album/airplay rankings have been used on a B2B level for some time by a range of major players in the US industry.

PMC is now indicating it wants to take these charts public, announcing that it will “leverage some of [our] key brands, chief among them Rolling Stone, Variety, Deadline and IndieWire, to deepen the influence and expand exposure of the BuzzAngle charts in addition to creating custom charts for specific content verticals”.

@ChartsFan @alexanderao i think you two will find this interesting.

we might be going back to the days of two charts! for those who don't know, the US used to have both Billboard and Cash Box.

and for those who don't know, B2B = business-to-business, as in a business makes a commercial transaction with another

how would their chart be different? would they also incorporate radio or just sales and streams and how would it work?

Most of the times BuzzAngle figures for pure sales are really inaccurate. Haven't payed much attention to their streaming reports, but they seem to conflict a lot with what Nielsen reports. :celestial5:

I hope they offer more insightful charts than Billboard. I don’t really mind BB’s chart business, but the website & magazine are ****ing gross :skull: Basic ass People magazine wannabe mess

buzzangle markets itself as more of an analytical market research company, and the industry loves that (see: HDD using their data on their charts as well). they present more bits and pieces of data than billboard

Well, that's the entire point. They want to rival Nielson, not be used as a guide until Nielsen confirms.

entirely unrelated. They are an upstart webpage.

I feel like they need a better name that people would take seriously

How do you know that Buzzangle isn't more accurate than Nielson? Nielson reports their numbers and Buzzangle their own. They don't match but that says nothing about the accuracy of each of the companies.

I think it is necessary to have a competing chart and/or an alternative reading of the chart. Billboard has been questionable in the past and have not been transparent. We need this.

Nielsen Music and BuzzAngle have basically the same sources of data - Nielsen has slightly bigger panel (some independent POS) than BuzzAngle but both have 100% the same DSP (streaming/downloads) reports. In fact, there's one thing widely discussed by majors' tracking analytics - data postprocessing.

Nielsen Music uses quite complicated statistical models (common in TV ratings systems) to 'weight' data. BuzzAngle reports contains 'raw' numbers (with some filtering of incorrect data). I think 2 years ago HDD said this is so wrong to use weighting models for streaming because Nielsen/BuzzAngle systems cover 100% digital market (that's why BuzzAngle reports are better of course...).And a few months later Tidal... stop reporting numbers to Nielsen/BAM panels. HDD figures were underestimated when Billboard's were quite the same overall.

So basically, Nielsen uses a similar strategy as the ones they use to estimate for an incomplete data set on a complete data set?
