It's underperforming given the circumstances. Of course, if it was Alessia, Meghan, Ariana, Miley or Gaga it would be seen as great success. However, if LWYMMD was Adele's song, 90% of ATRL would be saying she's over and a flop by now.

Taylor is coming back from the 1989, which is, by her own fans words, the second/third biggest era this decade. She could have released a track of her singing "Happy Birthday" and it would have hit #1 regardless. What I mean is that she was 100% going to smash during the first weeks, no matter what she released, because the hype and success from her brand and the 1989 era were enough to secure a smash first week.

LWYMMD is only comparable to Born This Way and Hello, because those were the only eras that matched /surpassed 1989 success. And even Born This Way, a song that did underperform, managed to spent 6 weeks at #1 before dropping like a rock. Hello was, however, a legitimate smash hit.

So,  even if the song was 3 weeks at #1, it is underperforming, because the song isn't even being  blocked by a huge monster like Despacito. It has been dethroned by one of the weakest #1 of the year. And a month after release, the song is #2 on itunes WITH A DISCOUNT, when according to swifties, Taylor is the queen of digital sales and she doesn't need cheap gimmicks to outsell everybody but Adele. The song is also underperforming on radio, even when it's slowly increasing. SIO, BS and BB had 160+ million airplay audience  by their fifth week of release, while LWYMMD has  barely 114  million.

The song is dropping hard in youtube views, and even harder on spotify. It's  out of the top 10 already, and it is being outstreamed by Demi Lovato's 3 month old song. Furthermore,  the song isn't top 10 on spotify in any big market, except the UK, and is not #1 on iTunes in any country anymore.

Conclusion: The song is underperforming. It's not flopping á la CTTR or PI, but the success it had so far can be attributed to the comeback hype and her strong fanbase. And I'm 100% certain it won't serve any kind of longevity.

I can't even disagree with such eloquent explanation that you just gave. :clap3:

LWYMMD is definitly weaker quality-wise that her past singles and it's been reflecting in the sales.

The essay...

Us Swifties don`t even care that much and surely none of us have meltdown about LWYMMD chart run. It`s a statement polarize song and it already did it job, gather the attention for the era.

We will start to worry if the second single couldn`t reach top 3.

No it's better, weirder and riskier.

It's just not the family-friendly, generic and extremely relatable lyricism from the 1989 singles.

I'm personally gettin' my life and the fact she still managed to spend a few weeks at #1 with such an annoying ego-trip song is A-MA-ZING. Any other pop girls wouldn't even touch the top 10 with such a song.

WANEGBT 3 wks

SIO 4 wks

Anyone with eyes can see that 3 is not much of a difference with 4 and, erm, 3.

Or look at the last era with multiple smashes, Bieber's: 1 wk, 2 wks, 3 wks.

Every pop girl has their peak, underperforming, and flop eras at different times. In 2019/2020, another girl will be having her smash era and Taylor will PROBABLY wish to have half of her success. That's how industry has worked for everyone who is not The Beatles/ Madonna and maybe Rihanna.

Of course, Taylor can be the exception to the rule, but who knows. Time is the ultimate truth teller.

Swift would have a lot more longevity if she returned to Country. While men still domunat the format, it's not uncommon for females artists to have 15 years of success. Carrie Underwood has remained relevant now for 12 years. And there are plenty of other women I can't remember off the top of my head. Reba McIntyre first charted on Country in the late 1970s, but she didn't have her biggest hit until 2000.

Wow! Imagine Dragons Thunder has reached #1 on ITunes, and has stayed at #1 with a bright green updates for the last five updates. Having a Rock-leaning song so at #1 is huge for this format.

are you serious? you guys are SO desperate for taylor to do badly. a song that reaches #1 for multiple weeks and has one of the highest one-week streams of any song is definitely not an underperformance. omfg.

Katy in 2013 was in the same position. She just came off a multiplatinum era with 5 #1 singles and many more Top 3 singles. She was literally everywhere and there was NO way her lead single for PRISM was going to underperform the first few weeks. She was smart and choose a radio-candy song as her lead though since it ended up smashing for weeks on end even if it ended with only 2 weeks at #1.

I think this era will be on par with PRISM (not album sales wise obv) in terms of single success. Obviously Roar was bigger than LWYMMD, but I mean like I feel she will have 2 hits this era max and then a few moderate hits at best.

The music so far...has been underwhelming compared to 1989.

When you come from a huge era you can have a Roar/Hello sized smash hit if the music clicks with the audience or a BTW/LWYMMD frontloaded mess if it doesn't. That's why the "3 weeks at #1!!!" excuse makes no sense.

I'm glad @Blue Honeymoon took the time and effort to explain this in detail for the few who didn't understand.

Bodak Yellow is #2 on iTunes btw, what a boost.

Yet the streams continue to plummet week per week per week failing to stabilize though...for instance, Kendrick's  HUMBLE. also broke streaming records, but is still #14 on Spotify, or one spot below this, several months later into its run than this.

having one huge single week means you're frontloaded.

Look is serving BTW realness atm. I wonder how many weeks it can stay in the Top 10.

Roar went up against Blurred Lines in it's first couple weeks and then also Royals...in the end...all 3 of these songs are some of the biggest songs of the decade

After SIO...ppl were expecting something more consistent in chart points...to go from over 1k chart points to half of that in two weeks is what ppl are truly talking about

If anything...LWYMMD is pulling a Harlem Shake

Perfect is #9? But ATRL told me Ed's era is killed by Shape of You? kii

um and, a huge debut is a huge debut. it is an accomplishment. yap about the frontloaded-ness if you want but that doesn't cancel out what it has already achieved. i don't see how it is so hard to understand here - unless you're just trying to downplay her cuz you hate her.

if you honestly expect a song to serve both longevity and huge openings, you might as well lower your expectations a bit cuz they don't come by so often; it hasn't come by for a long long time if you're narrowing the scope down to ATRL-favorite pop girls. :fan:

Sorry debuted at #2 because of that Hello and spent 8 weeks at #2 but being #1 for 3 weeks before being replaced by his own song, Love Yourself. I would say Sorry opened big and had longevity just opened during the same time that one of the biggest songs of all time was on top

Hello actually didn’t have very good longevity and this is coming from an Adele stan. Sometimes songs are so big at the start that they are bound to burn out. They are still smashes though. Unless you’re talking about longevity “at #1” which totally depends on competition (or lack thereof).
