How does Billboard decide which genre charts an album can chart in? Is it based on how the album is labeled genre wise?

I can't figure that out, as BB's process is subjective and arbitrary. For example, Thrift Shop peaked higher on Rock Airplay (#13) than Urban Airplay (30s or 40s), but BB didn't let TS chart both places. Yes, Mackelmore and Ryan Lewis are rap artists, but TS did better Alternative than Urban airplay formats.

In contrast, Lorde's Royals climbed all the way up to #3 on Urban RS, went T 3 at Mainstream Urban (#1 daily), and even reached BB's UAC T 30 (#27 or so). And Royals had long since gone recurrent on Rock RS. Also, Urban contributed to at least a plurality of Lorde's points toward the end of her 23 week T 10 run on the Hot 100. But, BB never let Royals chart on BB's hybrid Urban Chart.

What else drops this week? Never and SIO both had broken runs at #1. But Look doesn't have nearly the same multi format airplay and/or appeal of Never and SIO. Streaming is an issue too, as Look hasn't held the ODS momentum after its huge debut. @simmnfierzig would know better about Look's VS totals though.

No one else is dropping leads but Logic is coming close, Post Malone even closer. Cardi B already has this week’s #1 on lock. I’m thinking with Taylor’s performance and the discount she can rebound to #1 before Post Malone gets it next week.

Okay. If she's performing Look, that will further help sales and boost streaming again. I'm not sure about airplay though. Look is doing better there than CTTR. But neither of those songs have come/came close to Swift/Perry levels expected for lead singles by artists of their stature.

Ready For It debuted at #4. Same as Gaga and Perry’s highest peaks this year. It’s taking away airplay from “Look”, and I think that’s why it’s tanking. People are downloading RFI instead. It’s officially the second single, too.. So this discount may be the final push until the video’s out.

I haven't heard RFI. But if it's more like the 1989 Swift, it should get greater airplay support in the long run.

Taylor isn't performing the song anywhere, LWYMMD is being used during DWTS though

No it's not...

Yes it’s a Max Martin track, a mix of thenl Bad Blood remix, Wildest Dreams, with some extra bass. It’s catchy, and also follows a tropical/EDM breakdown. I’d recommend listening to it.

Yes it is, HDD reported it as such. Plus, it was sent to pop radio.

It's not that people are downloading the one and not the other, it's that the pop spins are being cut in half

Plus, Ready for It is far more accessible and GP friendly if you will

HDD didn't officially announce it, they just called it a "second single" during an article about Taylor's stats. That's not an official confirmation lol

Taylor or her team would announce it.

The second single is still coming :gaycat5:

Well, a promo single being in the top 10 on iTunes definitely tells me something. People are here for the song and the radio airplay, plus it being sent to pop means Big Machine are pushing this. Plus a video was apparently filmed already.

Well, that has nothing to do with what I quoted you about, but I agree

Think what you want sis, but this will definitely be the second single. It’s getting a video and it’s sent to radio, I hope the “3rd” single is what you intended on what’s coming. They wouldn’t send a promo single to radio.

You said it wasn’t taking away from the iTunes downloads but it’s still getting top 10 exposure, so I was explaining it very well could be.

Where are you getting this info that RFI is getting a video? Nobody has been saying that...

But that doesn't mean anything. It means people are buying both songs, like Roar and Dark Horse

No one can claim Roar would be selling 75k to 100k more if Dark Horse hadn't been in the Top 20 for the best part of Q4 before becoming an official single

When? And that's the first problem with this era. Less than zero promo, performances, interviews or anything. Weird.

Apparently on Monday :celestial5:

And Swifties have seen this no promo, no interview thing Taylor has been doing so far this era coming for a while now, I think she might start promoting closer to the album release though.

Weird, the song (...RFI) just added to Radio 1 Playlist at A-List on the UK, So I guess it's a single. All goes wrong, if it's a single and for me it's a super great song, why to release it so close to LWYMMD? Like now would have been making more sense or even in 2-3 weeks. All goes wrong in this era so far.

I dont think Taylor is coming back to #1 even with itunes discount, I think the streaming gap is too big

But if the plan we have been told is true and she is going to move into a next single in 3-4 weeks, I guess discounting the song during this time to give it a little push might be a good idea.

Yes I don’t think ...RFI? is the second single. HDD is just making baseless assumptions as they have been doing for quite some time.

HDD tends to over-exaggerate, while BB tends to remain too conservative. But both overestimated Look's first week download numbers. I like Swift okay, but it's safe to say Adele doesn't have to worry about anyone breaking her record now.
