I don't think it's fair to attribute Midnights' success all to the mania. Her reputation and the quality of her work go hand in hand. Her good name allow for a more welcoming reception of new album, and a good new album strengthen the gp and critics' good wills. Like took at TTPD: it was released during the hight of her success but because it was a weak album, she did not get any Grammys and the wave of public opinion started to turn on her. The fact that Midnights won AOTY and its critical acclaim are proof that it is a strong album, objectively speaking. I agree with you that there is a case to be made that TTPD and TLOASG are bad albums: no critical acclaim, no Grammys. But that is not the case for Midnights.
