Tom Holland singled out as worst Odyssey performance, called "comic book basic"

Featured Replies

Pannings from critics and publications:

From THR:

"It doesn't help that Holland, while always an appealing screen presence, is wrong for the role…comes across as, well, Peter Parker in a tunic, sapping the gravitas from Telemachus' path to maturity

From Time:

"Tom Holland, so bland he's practically unreadable)"

From Financial Times:

'"My dad's coming back!" Holland scowls, like a furious puppy. Nolan has called using contemporary language "a no-brainer". Respectfully, in this case, I would argue it was a brainer. Every "dad" of several jarred me out of the past."

To be fair some of the criticism stemmed from the creative decision with his American accent paired with the dialogue.

But why can't Mr. Holland-Coleman fare successful outside of MCU roles?

I just feel like many of the actors that are staples in Marvel movies kinda carry that vibe into other projects, and it sometimes comes off as goofy in movies with a more serious tone.

it's true he wasn't very good; but i wouldn't call him terrible

but you can tell he didn't fully research/understand his character when he thought that Telemachus was 16 and his co-stars had to correct him that his father was gone for 20 years redface

This is not surprising in the slightest. Tom Holland is an average actor at best and with other Odyssey cast members - who can act circles around him- he's bound to look bad/terrible in comparison. rip

also that variety list isnt really panning them

well not entriely

I'm so tired of seeing the same actors in every Hollywood movie, and of mediocre actors being cast solely because of hype. There's so much talent waiting to be explored, just look at Obsession

That's crazy, he literally admits he played the character wrong deadbanana

I wish Zendaya didn't get him that job, lowkey Timothée wouldve ate that role. Tom has no talent and he better save his spiderman coins because no one is hiring him after it (unless zendaya begs for him to be cast)

it's actually the opposite - Nolan wanted to cast Tom first, and then Zendaya got the offer after him

He literally played the character perfectly? I don't think people realize that is how his character was in the story.
