It's been 5 years since Olivia first announced Drivers License, a week later it would become one of the biggest debut singles ever, topping charts globally and breaking streaming records almost every day. Drivers License and the Sour era in general seems to be an anomaly when it comes to Gen Z pop stars. When it comes to the new crop of new chart toppers - Sabrina, Chappell, Tate, Gracie, all of these girls had to wait years before the careers really started to blossom. There are not any overnight sensations over than Olivia. This is odd when you think about the fact that the majority of the 2000s/2010s pop stars - even some of those who debuted after the boom of social media, were all able to easily gain momentum immediately after the debut single or their first album (while The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess is Chappell's debut, the single rollout spanned from 2020-2023, but it was not until 2024 that things got going for Chappell)

Are we ever going to get a big debut again?

The world is too divided to uplift one artist at once in unity. It's why the last mega pop star was Olivia. Unfortunately I don't think there will be any new superstars for a good minute until this right wing nut fest cools down around the world.

Chappell Roan feels like an overnight sensation to me. Was she really on anyone's radar before having a sudden meteoric rise during 2024?

(funny thing that her rise was originally helped by opening for no other than Olivia, so I guess it circles back to her indeed)

Not you introducing Olivia as if she were some organic, self-made popstar who got lucky and whose hard work finally paid off...

There aren't other overnight sensations like her cause they're trying not to be that obvious anymore with industry plants.

it is hard for a new song by a new artist to go viral. Olivia Dean is having a good few months though with her 2nd album . Sombr has done well on Spotify but not as good on other metrics.

It used to be that when a label signed a new artist that they thought had potential, they spent a lot of time developing their brand and sound and coming up with a great debut single. And then they'd push them hard. That's how we got I Wanna Dance With Somebody and I Kissed a Grill, for example. These days labels won't sign anyone that doesn't have an online presence already and they won't risk pushing their very first single too hard.

Who said that over night sensations have to be on the debut. Some artists strugle and suddenly get success. Chappell and Olivia Dean definetly fall in the category

The world has changed. Pop stars are more of an enigma now, and streaming has severely increased the reach of different music, meaning people are listening to more artists than ever. The nostalgia boom is helping the idea of an all-encompassing, general public-friendly pop star stay alive, in my opinion, but as someone said, the world is too divided to care about uplifting overnight sensations. Disney can't even produce a new Disney girl every couple of years anymore, which used to be guaranteed overnight pop success.

it would have to be another actress or tiktoker. you can't do that without a platform.

Overnight sensations were always a myth in my opinion, the artists that "suddenly" became big stars had been putting in the work for years, Katy and Gaga are great examples
