Totally agree. Even tho this era is being hailed as this supposed return to form after the underperformance of Solar Power, I'm getting the exact same vibes again. Not musically, obviously, but the way she talks about things feels just as detached, aloof and unapproachable as last time. Pure Heroine and Melodrama were so great, because - even tho they were obviously very artistic, deep and thoughtful projects - the albums and eras as a whole were so relatable which is what made them such roaring successes especially with the fans and cemented her as an all-timer.
 

I'm not feeling anything like that this time around. What Was That is a great song that brought back a lot of memories and emotions from the PH/Melo days, but aside from that song, I'm really uninterested in this album cycle and am failing to get anything relatable from her. Melodrama was a record for people in their early 20s and has accompanied me through a lot of life events, but I don't see Virgin touching me on such a level. But hey, that's just my opinion - I'll still always support her and celebrate the music. And maybe the full album will hit me the way PH and Melo did, so I'm open to being surprised.

I agree that she's doing absolutely nothing to attract people into tuning in for this era. What Was That was a huge missed opportunity, she had such a great start and then completely fumbled it by doing absolutely nothing to promote the song after it was released. I'm pretty shocked the song is still pulling +1M streams occasionally. 

 

On top of that, her controversial statements era is lowkey making people get annoyed by her and lowkey destroying the image she created for herself over the course of her career. 

 

I am, however, a firm believer that things are often chopped and cooked before they're served and ate. What Was That was very inoffensive, and since the album is probably gonna have more intricate versions of that, I'm pretty sure I'll love it regardless. MOTY was also intriguing enough to get me hooked again. The singles from Solar Power were not even on my top 5 favorite songs from that record, so I'm pretty sure the album is going to be great as always. I tend to love anything altpop regardless.

The issue is that Lorde isn't the rebel teen girl from New Zealand anymore. She wasn't that either with Melodrama, but the relatability of the heightened emotions in your early 20s and the complicated transition to adulthood has a stronger appeal than being a celebrity for a decade in your late 20s and talking about how wonderful a leaked celebrity sex tape is.

 

 

But being the same age as her, it's refreshing to see someone showing vulnerability in still trying to figure herself out. Most of us grow up expecting certainty, only to find that adulthood rarely provides it. Anyway, the album isn't even out yet, so let's see if the full project paints a clearer picture.

the last seconds of MOTY music video makes me so sad it literally almost made me cry (the part where she looks sad and turns her back to camera like she's ashamed) 

I do wish she would be a little more active, but she's always been Adele levels of reclusive.

I'm still fully on board with the album and era, don't get me wrong. But I think there is one fatal flaw in this pre-release moment, where the album will be the element that clears everything up. So, in the meantime we're getting little incomplete parts that are vague because she can't give it all away. Not much for her to say until we know all the contents of the work. I don't love the strategy per se, but hopefully when we get all the songs we won't feel the distance or detachment.

 

She probably won't release many more voicenotes or tiktoks. Those are very much looking like the bonus features from the music box. Pretty much ignored once the album was out. But, she generally does not favor an extremely online presence, so we've known that. 

 

@conquxror is right, the edgy statements made during the RS interview were definitely off-putting. Lorde stay AWAY from the Red Scare girls!

Hammer – The beginning of deconstruction.

What Was That – A moment of shock.  Confronting something she might've denied. 

Shapeshifter – Might be about discovering her gender fluidity.

Man of the Year – More self-discovery, picturing who Lorde wants to be.

Favourite Daughter – ? don't know what this might be about tbh, maybe letting go of inherited roles society portrays on us.

Current Affairs – No clue yet.

Clearblue – A turning point of potential or revelation, symbolizing new life maybe.

Broken Glass – Past self-image shattered.

If She Could See Me Now – Reflecting on her gender transformation, contrasting the past with who she is now.

David – The final unveiling of who Lorde is now, revealed by chipping away everything that was not truly her…

Pathetic era from an artist that's showing herself more problematic and immoral by the interview. She deserves the lashings coming her way tbh. The thing with Pamela was bizarre

I'd argue that expectations are/were high because she nailed the Girl so confusing remix, not just Melodrama.
