  • Yes. The first half of their discography is filled with great albums, but lately…   They cheapened themselves by collabing with lesser artists like BTS, Selena Gomez, whoever those artists o

  • Their first 4 albums (plus Ghost Stories) are pure perfection. Then they started to become this "touring act" and turned into P!nk (big but mediocre shows with really bad radio music).   Yes

Yes sadly. They have tons of classics and those hits will help them tour forever.

The last albums that were tolerable were ghost stories and a head full of dreams

those albums still had some classics in them

Before that, which was already 10 years ago, their discography was one of the best all time

I don't listen to their new stuff

This was excellent

Yeah loved this one tho a solo version would be better :suburban:

It's funny when people say Nickelback doesn't make rock music. What about Coldplay, seriously? Or Maroon 5? They're much worse than Nickelback.

Early Coldplay was classic indie rock tho. To the point they were considered Radiohead rip offs. They've always been based in rock, even if they've somewhat swerved into pop-rock during the last decade.

People comparing Coldplay to maroon 5 is absolutely ridiculous.

coldplay had a solid decade or so of genuinely respected music. Besides the "they're popular so they must be bad" hate everyone got during rockism era, they were always taken seriously.

m5 had song for Jane, which never reached the critical or commercial heights of their rock band peers before swerving into radio music.

i would even argue that songs of Jane is only as remembered as it is precisely because m5 went to ****. It received decently positive reviews at a time rockism was at its height. they weren't reaching the lyrical or melodical complexities of their peers.

It was a likeable album u put on loop in the car or cleaning your house that doesn't do your head in after three plays. Good. But nothing genius.

their career trajectories are not the same, even if they've ended up at similar positions in the present era

If your faves had released a song like this 23 years after their first release ATRL would never hear the end of it. Coldplay at their very worst are just inconsistent but still good.

Ghost Stories (except for A Sky Full of Stars) and Everyday Life are not radio-oriented at all.

waiT not the new song being produced by Max Martin:eek: the features though:deadbanana:

The song is about freedom, faith and how people believe in the same things despite different cultures, hence why it features musicians from the United Kingdom (Little Simz), Nigeria (Burna Boy), Palestine (Elyanna) and Argentina (Tini).

I stopped listening at Head Full of Dreams tbh, up until that alberm it was clear they declined hard in quality and were making Maroon 5 level music. They were still very hyped and selling out stadiums left and right which kinda annoyed me btw, like people ate their music regardless so i understand why they got lazy. It's a very comfortable situation and it happens to almost all big acts tbh, when they became mainly touring acts and just release new material because 'why not' - happened with U2 as well, but it took them almost 3 decades to reach this phase.

Yeah but their original sound, rock music, doesn't chart so what do you want them to do...? And it probably doesn't help that ATRLers almost universally hate rock music.

absolutely. their peak was X&Y and since then they've only made music for Make-A-Wish campaigns.

Still the best band out there

I love how they evolve and didn't stick to one genre.

they have nothing to prove anymore

This thread is 20+ years behind lol. Coldplay will, every once in a blue moon, put something out that sounds mildly interesting to me but I've always thought they were milquetoast... and Chris Martin has such a bland voice.

They became very commercial post-Viva La Vida. That's not to say that their music has been bad ever since, but they lost some of that magic from their first few albums. Their music feels very formulaic now, like it's written specifically for the radio and touring. Ghost Stories is the one exception; that album is very reminiscent of early 2000s Coldplay.

This is their song "Ghost Story" from 2014. It feels like it could have been on one of their early albums or EPs. THIS is the Coldplay I need.

Ghost Stories is such a masterpiece

definitely, their first albums were really great but they've been on autopilot since Ghost Stories (AHFOD has good singles tho). their music declined FAST, i think they've just kinda run out of creativity. haven't even bothered listening to the new songs

If you haven't listened how can you tell it declined? Arabesque is better than anything on A Head Full of Dreams :rip:
