Two years ago today, British singer-songwriter Foxes put out her first album in 6 years titled The Kick. Largely an uplifting synth-pop and dance-pop effort, The Kick went unnoticed by the general public and even most gays. I recently got into it fully (after having been obsessed with Sister Ray since 2022), and I was absolutely blown away by how immaculate the whole LP is. No, it does not try to do anything ground-breaking within the genre, but instead chooses to execute its conventions to the highest degree of quality it can, and in that regard it is a triumphant success.

 

I am not the first to say this, but The Kick is sort of like a spiritual successor to Carly Rae's Emotion, a fizzy, triumphany synth-pop effort with great little singer-songwriter meditations on romance and everyday life. It is absolutely criminal then that this album did not generate even an ounce of the buzz Emotion generated after release, as in my humble opinion every single one of the 12 tracks on this LP could be the best song from a lesser artist's discography. Highlights include the fizzy gay anthem Sky Love, the electric title track, the Dua Lipa-esque Potential, the dazzling saxophone-led slow jam Body Suit, the infectious house-tinged number Absolute, the self-acceptance ode Forgive Yourself, and the gorgeous twelve string guitar-supported closer Too Much Colour (which brings to mind Kacey Musgrave's Golden Hour).

YES! A million times yes! I remember hearing Sister Ray back in 2022, and thinking to myself how uplifting it was. I listened to the whole album shortly after and surprisingly enjoyed it. Continued to listen to it, loved how it made me feel. Then I thought, this sounds like Emotion's little sister, and from that point, I enjoyed the album even more than I imagined I would. 

Foxes ballads are unbeatable imo.

I'm kinda pissed how she didn't release a deluxe tho. Especially when she took such a long break.

Love this album  I wasn’t a big fan of her Friends In The Corner EP so it took me a while to listen to this, but it ended up being love at first listen. The whole album is great, but my absolute favorite is the title track. It’s one of those songs that just EXUDES happiness and positivity, I never get tired of it. My trinity is probably that, Body Suit, and Two Kinds Of Silence (and I’m lowkey appalled you didn’t mention it in the OP).

Such a good album. My underrated queen.

Shocked that it has been two years now, crazy how time flies. 

The Kick was my favourite album of that year. She served the albums flawlessly. Glorious, All I Need, The Kick. 

Also was obsessed with Sister Ray but didn’t get into the whole album until recently, a pop masterpiece 

Sister Ray is a bop but the album as a whole was meh to me. Maybe I need to listen again?

Yes! I haven't met a single person who thinks it's bad, most find it very immediate whilst others have to have it grow on them.

honestly i'm still very upset she didn't do any dates in the US for this record.
