Should Ava Max Release A Dark-Pop Record?

Featured Replies

I noticed that a lot of people praise her song Dancing's Done and keep saying that it's her best song and that she is very good at making dark pop songs.

As the artist who got famous for releasing a Gaga throwback song, should she steal her bag again and release her own take on The Fame Monster? Gaga abandoned that sound and her music career anyway, so it's not like Ava would be stepping on her toes.

In all my years on ATRL I’ve heard the term “dark pop” thrown around and it’s never really been defined. It seems like a term that means different things to different people. I remember when Reputation came out, users who were saying they wanted a dark pop album from Taylor were suddenly saying “wait no not like that” :skull:

Like are you talking about electronic pop with “dark” aesthetics?

Ava has been branded as generic since Sweet But Psycho so I feel like if she did “dark pop” that would only continue to be seen as basic by ATRL unless she did some crazy left turn into Bjork territory.

This is a good question. When I hear “dark pop” I think of pop emulating Chelsea Wolfe’s or Nine Inch Nails’ sound, but some people could be thinking more like Bad Romance or Natalia Kills songs (not exactly industrial or other dark-sounding genres — just darker imagery than most pop girls would go for).

Okay but she really should give us a Natalia Kills-inspired album, whether people categorise that sound as "dark pop" or not.

It would give Kim Petras, so no, she should stay a Fame era Gaga-inspired, sample queen as that is her 'thing'

Well I gave the fame monster and her own song Dancing's Done as examples in the OP. I'd classify her previous song Belladonna here as well and songs like alejandro, monster, government hooker, heavy metal lover. As others said some Natalia Kills songs fit this aesthetic too.

I remember her saying that Dancings Done is the direction she wants her next album to go, so hopefully its just a matter of time
