Well, it was certified 38x platinum under the RIAAโ€™s new rules in 2018, combining both album and track sales as well as streams - SEA/TEA basically. This is how the album surpassed โ€œThrillerโ€, essenti

Wait 38x for real??? Is some fraud involved or what ?? I don't see anyone talking about them

the Eagles Greatest hits being the best selling US album of all time (38x plat) is so weird to me.

Well, it was certified 38x platinum under the RIAAโ€™s new rules in 2018, combining both album and track sales as well as streams - SEA/TEA basically. This is how the album surpassed โ€œThrillerโ€, essentially.ย
ย

It was originally 29x platinum.ย
ย

Anyway, this album and its certifications have been a source of controversy for a long time.ย
ย

Quote

There is skepticism of the album's RIAA certifications. The additional certifications it received in 1995 indicate it had sold eight million units since 1993, but, perย Nielsen SoundScan, it sold fewer than a million copies during that period, as well as just over five (rather than 17) million copies from 1991 (when SoundScan began tracking) to 2006,[26][27][28]and 6.4 millionย album-equivalent unitsย from 1991 to February 2020 (again, far fewer than the certifications credit).[29]ย In 2018, Sony Music CEO Rob Stringer stated the album only sold 2.3 million units from 2006 to 2018, yet it received certifications for nine million additional units. Warner Music, which distributedย Their Greatest Hits, claimed the figure came from newly discovered sales dating back to 1976, but a representative from Michael Jackson's estate noted sales audits are usually restricted to three years and said, "The notion that they can go back 10, 15, 20 or 30 years and find units that were never counted before is absurd, they reviewed these records before. Why didn't they find those uncounted records then?"[30]

This isnโ€™t surprising.ย The album features two of McLachlanโ€™s most famous songs: โ€œAngelโ€ and โ€œAdiaโ€, both of which were T5 H100 hits.ย
ย

Also, โ€œAngelโ€ has been used in almost every charity/non profit org. commercial on television for the last 20+ years so no wonder the album is still selling.ย :rip:

I was going to say that Hotel California is one of the biggest songs of all time but the album doesnโ€™t even have that :skull:

Isn't there a country singer that had albums with lots of diamond certs?? I don't even remember his name lol but Im sure I heard about this artist with massive certifications, I think he used to sell his albums in packs of 4 or sum that led to multiple certifications.

1. He was obsessed with overtaking the Beatles and is chart hungry.

2. You cannot find his music ANYWHERE, Spotify /YouTube etc, without buying it. Even to this day.

3. He had some double albums, which RIAA counted as 2 units per copy sold. So if a double album sells 5m, itโ€™s certified Diamond. Thatโ€™s also how Shania Twain got her third Diamond cert in the US.

I canโ€™t at people being confused by the Eaglesย :rip:

ย

They were one of the biggest bands ever in the 70s and their songs have been used in so many TV shows and movies over the last 50 years. I hear at least one of their songs anytime I go into a grocery store. Hotel California alone is legendary.ย

ย

OT: Garth Brooks is a mystery to me because to this day I have never heard a song of his. Shania Twainโ€™s certs as well shocked me for that same reason but I at least knew one or two of her songs before. Probably has to do with me not growing up with country.

Yep plus the alberm is actually very good and Sarah had already a solid career by then, it all contributed to that big moment for her.
