imo any hunting for sport should be illegal and I'm a meat eating leather wearing American.

Obviously. But rich people will always find a way around it with some sort of loophole. It's disgraceful, what even is the appeal of trophy hunting, to take a picture and share it with your friends?

if you kill the animal for the purpose of food, you might as well use every inch of the animal so nothing goes to waste.

but i'd prefer if people would leave animals alone

It is giving evil vibe so yes.

if they're overpopulated, like deer and rabbits, no.

if they're at risk for extinction, like tigers and elephants, yes.

I work in biodiversity, and this is a very nuanced and controversial topic that a lot of people don’t understand, and for which sadly there’s not an easy answer.

the kind of trophy hunting where you see a rich white dude standing proudly next to an elephant he just killed (or like in the OP) is 100% illegal, disgusting and should be punishable by law. most especially because they hunt threatened species that are on the brink of extinction.

BUT, as shocking as it might sound, “ethical” trophy hunting is a thing and allowed only for certain species. this happens in Africa or during hunting season in Europe for example, where some species have to be hunted in order to control their population numbers. these species will overpopulate if they are not kept under control, and will have negative cascading consequences for the entire ecosystem. it is also a conservation mechanism to protect threatened species.

so as cruel as it might sound, trophy hunting is sometimes needed to protect to health of our environment
