SM's "dark history" in the early 2000s is well documented by Korean media. After H.O.T and S.E.S disbanded, a huge revenue stream was lost and the replacement groups, MILK, Black Beat and even later, CSJH The Grace, all failed to capture the same success. It was looking bleak.

 

SM was desperate and took a huge risk in turning to Japan with BoA and it paid off in the best way. They basically reset her career, made her learn Japanese and shipped her there with a hope and a prayer. I can't imagine the pressure she must have felt, but it worked out. Had she failed, I think the company would really have struggled to reach the legacy it did today.

BoA was impactful to SM's future? Yes.
