When I'm Gone has amassed 141M Spotify streams in just 8 months. That's a minor hit imo. I thought she's over. What happened?

Streaming algorithm inertia can get you that high by itself

 

Unfortunately passive streaming has made it impossible to ascertain what songs the public actually wants. It's not like back in the day where at least you knew X amount of people had actively chosen to spend $1.29 on the single.

+800M is when you can call it a hit, in my opinion. There are almost 20 songs with over 2B on Spotify now, so yeah...

The problem isn't Kathy's music, it's her image, which she still hasn't really put in any great effort to improve since 2017. People stream ha casually but don't talk about her as openly as more modern acts.

 

"Harleys In Hawaii" is a really good example of this, because it rose to prominence due to the fact that people didn't know it was a Katy Perry song, since it was marketed terribly upon its initial release. Once people heard the material, they liked it, hence why it's headed for 300M streams before the year's end despite being a 3 year old song.

Cute numbers but not any semblance of a hit 

That's what happens when you release great music
