Freakshowvato Posted September 11, 2022 Posted September 11, 2022 BTS spearheaded a new wave of mainstream Kpop emerging into western culture. 1D were following in Bieber's footsteps of heartthrob sensations and massive fan appeal (which BTS also has). So I voted for BTS but I think it's pretty equal impact wise. Neither have changed the landscape musically or vocally, just commercially and pop culture wise.

On the other hand, 1D's demand was huge and authentic but they didn't bring anything new to the music scene. So i think 1D had more success but BTS had more impacts.

So tell me, in term of impact what has 1D contributed that Spice Girls and the Beetles haven't already contributed before. Compared to BTS, 1D may be bigger in sales but, they didn't change the game or create a renaissance of boy bands that you would see in the 90s. Most of their music follows the same 90s formula of soft masculinity. Yes, they may have had copycats, but only 1D was able to maintain success. Compared to BTS, Girls Generation and Psy, they brought a whole another culture to western audiences and made it the mainstream. Also, unlike 1D they had to overcome the language barrier which tends to shorten their appeal by a lot.

Iridesence Posted September 11, 2022 Posted September 11, 2022 BTS is a little more global and feels like they've had more cultural impact on the music landscape (helping K-Pop be as big as it is in the western market). One Direction has a little bit more popularity amongst the GP in the west and more recognisable hits there, but haven't shaped pop culture that much outside Harry Styles + their fanbase, which is arguably less crazy than BTS'. I'd go with BTS, but not by much.
