Underrated songwriters

Featured Replies

We always talk about how underrated some artists are but let’s talk about underrated songwriters that deserve praise here and overall by the GP and critics…

Lily Allen is such a very original and fresh songwriter to me… the way she mixes sarcasm and made her own while not sounding forced, her social comments and views and also her songwriting based on personal experiences are very good tho

Shakira is another example, you can tell she has a very own style to write with some weird but iconic lines that are so her and nobody can come with something like that more than her

Sabrina Carpenter last album really shows how of a storyteller she is… also she’s very sarcastic, fun, relatable and can make catchy bops at the same time with such unique details that puts her songs on another level…

are there another ones for you that deserves more praise for their songwriting?

Mariah Carey doesn't get her flowers as a songwriter considering her stats and the scale of her catalogue

It hit me recently that Cyndi Lauper is one of the most underrated songwriters ever. She's mostly recognized for a flop cover, which sucks (not the cover itself but this fact). Time After Time is a masterpiece though, I am so glad it was also a hit.

But she also has masterpieces like Sally's Pigeons, Hat Full of Stars, Unhook The Stars, Water's Edge, Fearless etc.

She deserved so much more in her career.

Otherwise, I personally also think Madonna is underrated as a songwriter as most people regard to her as just an entertainer, which also sucks.

Mariah Carey

George Michael

Madonna

Agreed with all these three :clap3:

Alessia Cara:

  • "My view with a looking glass won't catch the past, only photographs remind us of the passing of days"
  • "Change in every wind, the sands of time don't know our name // Nothing's sure but surely as we stand, I promise I will stand the same"
  • "In a river of tears beneath the stream // Under the waves I've found the strength to say, the river of tears has washed me clean"
  • "I don't want to be alone another night, I don't want to feel this blue // How do I let you go if I don't want to"
  • "Paint a picture in my mind, encapsulate the fleeting feeling // It ricochets, replays the pain till every trace is leaving"
  • "Don't know if I wanna get you back, or get you back someday // Don't know if I'm even mad or just sad you couldn't stay"

Mariah Carey

Ariana Grande

Whitney Houston

Celine Dion

Michael Jackson (his biggest hits he wrote by himself :skull:)

Janet Jackson She was the creative force behind all of the concepts for her albums

Madonna she wrote her debut hits with just one cowriter. no songwriting camps here

George Michael

little richard

otis blackwell (elvis' songwriter)

james brown

Kerli (she wrote for demi lovato & Selena I'm pretty sure)

On ATRL I’d say Adele. On the other hand, Adele is clearly respected as a songwriter by her peers and fans around the world.

I’ll pick somebody that critics don’t care much and the public is not quite fully here to give it a nice legacy like Carey, Michael, etc

Alison Goldfrapp wrote all of the Goldfrapp records with her duo partner Will Gregory and it never ceased to amaze me how versatile and diverse their writing and world-building is. They always got the pop right and they could also tip to things outside of it. They never get their flowers, when they did all by themselves and had pop girls of the time running to big producers to help them get that sound.

The way they influenced a lot of artists that this site stans with their sound and vision… you must be right x
