The SPS figures for most 2010s albums are inflated, because the exact same people who bought a pure copy shifted to streaming it just a couple years after the fact.

Even if we limit it's units to 2011 only, BTW did underperform considering the huge debut, but it was still a MAJOR WW success, selling 7m pure copies, 2.5m in the US alone, was the 2nd biggest era of 2011, only behind Adele's 21.

 

The nerve to come after it and claim the extra ~2m units it did in the US since the streaming era started shouldn't count is beyond dumb especially coming from Swifties and Beyhive who gloat about 4 and Lover having longevity even tho those eras struggled compared to the previous eras of those artists

The thread is about frontloaded eras tho and that describes BTW perfectly. Adele’s 30 is another example.

660k debut without the discount, total sales 2.5m, so it did quadruple its debut numbers

How did this thread just become a debate about BTW.  I would have thought that was the clearest example of a frontloaded era.

but there were factually as or more frontlodad eras, such as MDNA, happiness begins, witness, rebel heart, 30, all for you( more frontlaodad outside of the us, less in the us),damita jo, now, not too late, Double Dutchess and more.

 

most of the albums mentioned her are flop on streaming(and yeah BTW did struggle on streaming in the past but it has healthy reccurent streams of more than 1 million yesterday). btw is doing about 200k a year in the us i think so it will reach the 5 paltnium in the mid decede which is a big achivement

born this way is frontlodad but also very sucssuful. it does not contradict. you can't call an album that reached the top 5 in the YEC in the top 2 markets(japan and the us) not successful. it just sold really decent amount of pure sales, yes many of the copies were sold whitnin the first week but that stil counts. it also was acclaimed and helped selling a massive tour which are two extra factors.

if we go by your logic, it is better to sell 100,000 sales in the first week and get to 1 million after it than sell 1.1 million in the first week and double it after. percentage matters, but you have to put it inside a context

Sure we can all pull out our calculators and find more front loaded albums, but that does not mean BTW was not front-loaded.  It debuted with 1.1 million units and had a 4x EAS multiple in the digital era.  That is pretty front loaded.
 

 And honestly, that is fine.  Being front loaded is not inherently bad when you have such pent-up demand and strong recurrent sales.  Most of Taylor’s albums, only have a multiple in between 5-10 and clearly she is doing just fine.
