I've actually seen Sunmi for free multiple times at her peak and she wasn't treated much like an idol. She was even drunk on stage one day at a uni festival in 2018. No idol would be able to do that at their peak.

 

She's just mega fad now and to answer the first question of if she would have been able to smash with Love Dive, the answer is: NO!
