ARTPOP should’ve been planned in July 2013 the same way chromatica had been planned and finalised with the single choices rollout etc .  Applause-DWUW w/ better feature + MV, and then IWBWY should’ve come in February 2014 and been used to sell the album, and start a transition over to HAC and be a palette cleanser. Grammys 2014 performance was originally booked for ARTPOP. the fall months and that song would’ve matched perfectly. Also Wrecking Ball had just been smashing hard, so there was a place for a relatable ballad like that. Especially with the big Gaga performance rollout that she cracked perfectly with how music used to sell, 

 

Looking back at it, AP wasn’t a total catastrophe people said no to (like Witness). It was never going to be a smash but I think with a plan before release they could stick to, no R Kelly, no manager fallout, a proper planned third single it’d not be such a downfall for her and it’d have hit 2xPlatinum in the US now

IWBWY is a HORRID cheesy Disney "I love you my little monsterzz!!1!!!" lyrics'd ballad. The way we were that close to her ME! moment with those kindergarten lyrics, I always shudder even thinking about it

Dope was the original chromatica 2 into 911 transition that we didn’t know we needed but IWBWY had FABulous vocals and the iTunes festival performance was so good. The demo production was cheesey but I guess she has to fit the ballads onto the parent album 

AP has lot of potential for third moderate hit, but they waited way too long between DWUW and GUY.

 

All her eras have been like that. Either they wait too long to launch 3rd single or don't bother at all. 

Iwbwy isn't that bad lol or maybe I'm just a sucker for her voice all around that I barely even notice the lyrics tbh. But yeah, there's a reason why it was updated and changed into something else. It does feel very second grade in comparison to her best works though lol.

All the iTunes Festival performances were better than the final studio versions though.

 

The point is, the pop-rock production was not enough to save its indefensibly juvenile lyrics. Also, the "Dope vocals" get a lot of flak from the fans but it does the job of conveying the emotions and rawness behind it brilliantly. As a listener you are supposed to feel uncomfortable because she's in a lot of distress and on the verge of spiraling out. It was never going to be a commercial hit but IWBWU wouldn't have been a hit either, let alone a smash. It just doesn't hold up lyrically.

 

Besides, IWBWU is an extremely niche, 'love letter to the fans' type of song while Dope (even though it's a heavy listen for most) is pretty universal. Anyone who has hit rock bottom can relate to it because it hits hard when it hits home. It's special.

But I love a good drums moment thats why IWBWY is still a cute girl albeit very Disney'd

Dope fits into the album but that user spoke about smashes where art is compromised. IWBWY sounded like dope x Gypsy hybrid (Gypsy should’ve been third single in Feb 2014 instead of a fan favourite)… I don’t see miss #8 -OUT as giving smash. 
 

as for ARTPOP lyrics yeah she kinda almost ruined DWUW with the lyrics about her bones hurting  Applause a song about clapping  she did angle these songs from her perspective a bit, but I think with the final ‘Dope’ that is very relatable but not hit. But… I still believe in IWBWY (but obviously worked on a lot more)
