Lady Gaga

This is part 1 of the Lady Gaga discussion.

Joanne is likely her worst studio album, not because she switched her sound, but because she didn’t switch her sound enough. You can hear a raw, analog and artistically driven record in there. Yet it is watered down heavily in the production, possibly due to BloodPop as others have mentioned. This can be especially seen in the first half of the album. Many fans find songs like JW/DIC as the saving grace of the record but I see them as traditional pop songs Gaga has already done before in a much better/more authentic way. The second half of the album explores a new sound, which I like in some areas. Sinner’s Prayer is raw and great, both lyrically and production wise. I also don’t dislike Hey Girl as much as others. Sure the melody could’ve been more dynamic but the production is honestly solid and the outro is cool. Just Another Day is also one of the strong songs on the album, it’s so pure and you can hear happiness in Gaga’s voice. I didn’t get this in the rest of the album, unfortunately. It tried to tow the line between mainstream pop and a more stripped back/Americana sound which just left the end product as half-baked and less inspired than her other albums.

Totally agree.

I think Diamond Heart, Sinner’s Prayer and Grigio Girls are the songs that actually hit the nail on the head in Joanne. They’re elemental, thematically consistent and probably her most confessional lyrics. Joanne might fit in here too but the vocals and production are a bit unbearable.

The lyrics:

Got a baby sister
Who looks just like me
And she wants nothing more
Than a man to please

are genuinely more thematic to Gaga’s “generational family trauma” than anything else on the album imo.

Even though I genuinely like songs like Million Reasons and Perfect Illusion, I don’t think they reveal much of Gaga. They could easily be Ally Maine tracks as far as I can tell.

He was definitely brought in to modernise it (to its detriment). His production on Dancin’ In Circles works… but why is he on tracks like Joanne, Diamond Heart or Million Reasons?

I’ve actually always wondered if Ronson was pissed off by BloodPop’s involvement in Joanne. His playing of the Perfect Illusion demo may have been some subtle shade to BloodPop’s tinkering with it. It’s clearly the better version even from the LQ play here.

I agree, his involvement should've been limited to only a few songs like John Wayne, Dancin In Circles and Perfect Illusion imo although they don't fit the initial vision she had for the record.

And I actually think PI has the best production on the album. The instrumental is just *chef's kiss* and I'm in the minority that thinks Gaga's screams/screeches/growls perfectly encapsulate the chaotic feelings after a heartbreak. :emofish:  I still adore the hazy, dreamy, and psychedelic version of Kevin and wish we could get it some day too. They're basically two different songs for me.

I'd like to hear Mark's retrospective thoughts on Joanne someday, but it sounded like he was here for BloodPop joining the team in this interview:

Meeting up at New York’s Electric Lady studio, Gaga and Welch conceived of “Hey Girl,” which Ronson says sounds like “two girls singing a soul record in the Seventies.” For an organic, earthy feel Ronson recruited many of the musicians he used on projects with Amy Winehouse and Rufus Wainwright, yet he says that producer Bloodpop, who came into the project and worked on some tracks, made sure Joanne didn’t sound retro. “We could have disappeared into our love for analog authenticity,” he says, “but he came in and shook it up in a great way. He brought it into the modern era.” Although Gaga and Ronson worked on the album for about six months, Joanne was so harried that additional songs were being recorded for a deluxe edition at the album’s ready-to-go mastering session.

He also calls PI the love child of Kevin's Let It Happen and Bad Romance in the same interview and I totally see it.

BloodClot ruining everything he touches, what a surprise

Anyways, Joanne is a great album even with his involvement, but i do believe that it would be way better and more authentic if he wasn't part of it.

Bloodpop is great pop producer and the opinion of the sheep doesn't matter :heart2:

I'm gonna drink my tears tonight

I'm gonna drink my tears and cry

cause I know you love me baby

The song is a vibe, you're just used to the ontz ontz to spike you up.

Not when A Star Is Born is one of my favourite Gaga albums which is ontz ontz-free.

Joanne without BloodPop would've just been Currents with Gaga screaming over the instrumentals. He did what he had to do.

Ultimately it’s still a Gaga album,  there’s functional songs on it she just didn’t do a dance pop album at that point in time, I know that was a bit traumatic for some but… :toofunny3:

I do agree, again, it was a little half baked didn’t go full in.

Bring back DJWS and file a restraining order against ShitPop.:santa:

will Gar ever top the ORIGINAL version of NOBTR? (and not that djws garbaj remix?) :dancehall:

Then explain why ASIB (excluding the 2 spoof dance pop songs) is brilliant and loved? :santa:

The singer-songwritery songs on ASIB worked brilliantly, Shallow is gorgeous and so are most of the tracks.

It just did what Joanne failed to do

I don't think BloodPop is a shitty producer per se because he's definitely done some good songs even with her. But I also don't necessarily believe that they're a great match musically.

He's more of a good friend to her, I guess.

yup. good friends != good coworkers.

my mom and her sister-in-law got along great until my mom started working for her sister-in-law's husband (her brother) and my aunt would come into the office demanding my mom clean the toilet among other crazy things. ended with my mom quitting and screaming that my aunt needs psychological help. but it's been 15 years since they've worked together and now they get along great again

Hag Girl is horrible like 90% of Dead Aunt. Glad we've moved beyond HagPop and Darkbops are the new thing :santa:

Slay Girl is gorgeous and Joanne is full of BOPS. All songs slap except for Angel Down and Joanne.

Listening to Death of Coronatica. I love BloodPoop. BloodPoop is my friend.

Wonder the same, isn't that one of the few songs she doesn't have a writing credit tho?

Yeah she doesn't have writing credit on it, I believe it must have been written for Bradley character and she heard it and decided to jump on the excellency
