Ok not to start off on a downer but I have to say one thing.

The news about MF DOOM already started this year on a contemplative note, but losing SOPHIE on 1/30/21 really amplified this and took me in directions I didn't expect, casting a shadow over everything after. Now I had been enough of a stan going back for a while, but it goes to show sometimes you don't know just exactly what you have until it's gone. Certain artists' deaths had hit me hard already, but I would honestly compare this one more to the sting of losing a family member than anything else. So I just want to preface these recap festivities with the disclaimer I spent most of this year chasing the high only her music could give me -- her official studio work, the massive sprawl of unreleased stuff, anything that sounded even a little similar -- as opposed to keeping up with new releases the way I'd try to in other years. So even the projects I loved this year I didn't end up spending crazy amounts of time with, but it is what it is.

Won't be ranking UNISIL up against other tracks since it wasn't even a new song (tho it was new to me), but do want to shout it out as a typically excellent example of her kinetically charged abilities.

So it was a hard year but I try to focus on positives as much as I can. Thank you my Immaterial queen for every gift you gave us.

your tributes are lovely, I'm glad that you were able to spend some time with both of their catalogues.  the monumental impact is one that can't really be described, it's something that is unique to you and so important. at the end of the day the meaningful music experiences, the boundless creativity, and the personal connection you have to what you listen to can be most rewarding thing in a year ~

excited to seeeeee

Ready to see what's on these mysterious lists :gaycat3: That SOPHIE tribute post :'( I haven't even explored that much of her discography because it's not completely my taste but I was definitely sad when I heard about her passing.
