I'd say it was kind of usable and representative until about the beginning of this decade. 

Candle in the Wind always stood out like a sore thumb, but it's hard to argue with its stats.

Shallow IS bigger than any Gaga song. Only old school stans or nostalgic people will say otherwise. It's outcharting all of Gaga's singles, will end up outviewing them as well. 

 

Baby One More Time was a big culturam momentum but if you see its chartrun...there was a lot of other song charting like it back then. 

It was huge but it wasn't a Believe from Cher. or a My Heart Will Go On as far as i know.
