Tom Petty was confirmed dead just before midnight EDT, or 9 pm PDT. His totals will continue to increase through at least part of today. He wasn't big in the download era, much less streaming, so it'll be interesting to see how his fans choose to consume the music of a real Rock legend. I was not a fan of Tom Petty (so I won't add him to my signature), but I have a lot of friends who were. More than 40 years in the music business, and finally scoring his first #1 album this decade, is almost as remarkable as Bowie. But Petty was US-based, while Bowie was British. So I don't know how this will play out. His airplay won't roll, since this happened on a Monday. But we'll have to look at actual MB AI figures for airplay totals, since only those include Gold songs. This could easily shake up the album race for #1, where Shania was expected to debut on top. We'll see what the next three days bring there too.
