Brandy's Moesha

Brandy might be mostly remembered for her music, vehicular manslaughter and/or falsifying marriage documents but 30 years ago (01/23/96) was the premiere of Moesha which was a career breakthrough for the then 17 year old Brandy. Interestingly, her audition for Moesha was initially considered "bad" because she hadn't acted in two years, but the creators decided to take a chance on her (though some speculate her mother, Sonja Norwood, whom allegedly would cuss out anyone who would cross her, influenced the decision). Eventually, as her music career took off, episodes were used to promote her songs with one episode consisting of Moesha going to a Brandy concert. But Brandy's music career brought its own drama. Most of y'all know Brandy got clocked by Monica at a VMAs rehearsal. But at least it made for a great performance because they truly made you believe they were fighting over a boy. sistrens

There's even an episode on Moesha that makes a reference to their beef! But Monica wasn't the only one that had a bone to pick with Brandy back in the day.

The tension between Brandy and Countess Vaughn, who played Kim, reportedly began during the show's run. While they played best friends on screen, multiple reports and later interviews suggest a rivalry developed behind the scenes. Countess allegedly had the impression the show was popular because of her portrayal of Kim Parker, rather than Brandy's Moesha. Brandy reportedly reminded her that she only had the job because of her. This tension is often cited as a major reason why Vaughn's character was written out of the show and given her own spin-off, The Parkers.

Then the introduction of Brandy's brother, Ray J, was a point of contention. He was given a role to "ride the coattails" of Brandy's success, a move that allegedly led Sheryl Lee Ralph (who played Moesha's stepmother, Dee) to leave the series. While Sheryl initially respected Brandy—especially for wearing braids at a time when Black women were notoriously discriminated against for their hair—she eventually grew annoyed with Brandy's behavior on set.

Sheryl Lee Ralph hasn't held back about why she eventually left the show, and it wasn't just about the set atmosphere. She was deeply disappointed in the writers for destroying the image of the Mitchells as a stable Black family. In a 2022 interview, she famously said: "I believe in the power of a warm and wonderful Black family... and for them to take that family and literally just ruin the family by calling the father a liar... why do this? Why destroy this family?"

Nevertheless, Moesha was more than just a 22-minute sitcom; it functioned as a revolving door for the biggest names in music history. It was the only place on television where you could see the entire R&B landscape integrated into the plot. We had Usher, Lil Kim and Jamie Fox acting alongside Brandy and legends like Mary J. Blige and DMX were musical guests in certain episodes which goes to show the level of industry respect Brandy commanded at her peak. Now put some respect on the braids!

Frank Mitchell was a HORRIBLE ******* father the entire run of the series.

I used to watch it and I loved it. The series finale was truly WTF. They should have resolved it with a standalone episode later on.

Brandy also acted in The Game as Chardonnay and she did great there too.

Oops thats what I get for not proofreading deadbanana2

Moesha is actually what introduced me to Brandy. I used to love that show!! I remember I was shocked to find out that she was an artist, actually. I also remember that she was on the first season of America's Got Talent as a judge before I found out she sang.

I remember Moesha being on the air as a kid, I think it was on a network called UPN or something? Perhaps the WB (Now known as the CW). Anyway, I never watched it. I did, however, stan The Parkers and would always watch it after school. I think the whole series was on reruns at that point though
