Maybe because Ed is selling out stadiums worldwide? and you can trash the performance of his last 2 albums all u want but they were very clearly more lowkey releases without a major push while Katy's last album was supposed to be her big return

Yummy and Intentions are much more commercial than anything from Ed's two previous albums, and like I said, Bieber had a lot of payola going on. I'm not saying Subtract and Autumn Variations weren't huge flops, but context is important.

Yeah, that's the point. He tried to do a Folklore and it didn't stick because the music is not commercial enough. Taylor succeeded because she's a force and has a big fandom. Now one thing that does make me curious is how do you think Katy would do with Folklore-style songs, considering she is bombing on electropop already.
