i mean for those who stan for a while, it's clear she isn't really happy and the reason why is very obvious. Butterfly doesn't change that

I do feel sad for her, she has always struggled with identity and purpose. To be fair, I also often have the thought to move to a little mountain town and live out the rest of my days in peace lol. Let's not hyper focus on this, as I think it's pretty common to just want a little peace and slow down. HOWEVER, mama has got to get it together and present her best self, if she wants to promote and sell this new era + record.

I love her but after Froot she had a serious meltdown and was never the same. It seems ever since that happened she's been trying to manifest happiness in simple things in life, being more carefree and more positive in general. It's like she's trying her hardest to convince herself she's actually happy instead of searching for it on a deeper level.

The problem is, these small things in life don't bring true happiness. You can tell in some of her post Froot songs that she's trying to fabricate happy songs instead of just reflecting her actual happy mood. For example, Butterfly is fun and it seems somewhat sincere but it also seems to be inspired by a silly thing in life, tik tok. You can tell she listened to tik tok sped up songs and said wait, that's fun! Let me try! I do like the song but I don't think it reflects Marina's state of mind.

I don't care if the music is happy or sad, I do wish she could just find something that truly made her happy, even if it meant quitting music.

Well, I'm not sure if it's the same reason that @CBC talks about, but I think that the real reason she's not happy (and as @Musicmajor just shared) is her identity issues and her severe case of "pursuit of success and happiness".

 

If you pay attention to the lyrics from her MatD trilogy (aka the Diamonds trilogy) and if you read interviews she did back on those days, there is a clear mental path she went through her early career day:
 

TFJ -> Her desperation to be different from the other girls, she wants success but she decides to keep her persona true to herself.
EH -> She is so depressed that decides to emulate other girls (archetypes) in order to find success and a "vacation-time" from her real persona (aka struggles and deception).

FROOT -> She found success and it's happy, she goes back to her real persona and finds maturity and growth.

 

Then she decides to drop the "& the diamonds" as she found what she was looking for all her career/life.

She's now MARINA, just her, not a stage persona, but she keeps changing and struggling to find her own identity. 
 

L+F -> She's "herself" and got confidence. But then she fails to capture the same great reception from her fans and she adopts a new identity = she turns "over-woke and political".

ADiaML -> New "over-woke and political" persona.

 

And so it goes... she keep struggling between lack of success and the lack of a real identity (I get her, I'm a libra too haha jk).
That's why she is always depressed and disappointed with everything in her life, no matter how much she changes or run away from her problems.

first ATRL post omg.... but this era is kinda dead before it even began? No interviews or press or anything and she hasn't interacted with the fandom at all.... it is weird timing with FROOT 10 coming this week so hopefully we get some movement and excitement

Those essays are tea. This is the 3rd time she is starting an era with a song about being 'just happy' - Happy, Handmade Haven, Butterfly.

She needs to go back and talk about deeper topics than just:
a. Finally being happy with life/herself
b. Politics
c. Forced woke ****.

 

She has a dark and twisted sense of humor and we love it, she proved that in some of her non-singles fan favorites (Hermit the Frog, Homewrecker, Savages...). She can go real deep in her lyrics but maintaining it fun and twisted. 
 

But no, she keeps releasing the same type of "optimistic" music and then having breakdowns every single era about how stuck she feels in her life/career.

What is the point of doing interviews when everything nowadays is on tiktok? She was posting on tiktok consistently (which is the only form of promo that matters in 2025) until everyone freaked out over that tiktok of her eating salad in her car. And freaking out over benign stuff like that is exactly the reason she doesn't interact with fans let's be real

the visuals and the sound of this era (so far) remind me a lot of froot even if the first single was a bit disappointing to me i pray to god the next will be better bc so far everything else is there for me to love
