Rev8 Posted January 15 Posted January 15 I am kind of shocked that some of these songs are getting knocked up.. maybe I should've personally promo'd the rate some users with TASTE

I don't think it's a bad song or anything, but I thought all of Sabrina's slow songs were getting slaughtered alike. Granted that Don't Smile is certainly one of the better ballads on Stout n Sour, the song has more of a wistful vibe compared to some of the more "whiny" tracks. It also has light ethereal elements to the production going on back there. Pretty neat! It's interesting to see what connects with voters and what doesn't. Maybe people were rating it high because they were just thankful for the album being over? Busy Woman kind of outsold tbh... Invisibility: "I can't treat this song with respect or seriousness because "dont smile because it's over, cry because it happened" and the like were the phrases one of my besties and I used to annoy each other with in high school." Moonlight Nation: "Doesn't work as a closer, but it quickly grew on me once I revisited it outside the album. This sound brilliantly suits Sabrina's voice, and I love the bitter melancholy of the lyrics." @kimberly hero

Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 11 x 1 @MusicLoverDude HIGH SCORE 10 x 5 (greento, Quicksand, MP2K, Julia Fox, Graves) 9 x 5 (305, glitch, makeawish, wish, brokee) LOW SCORE 5 x 4 (K$Ellie, redsing707, jacklovesyou1, Dark Miracles) 2 x 1 (GraceRandolph) The flirtiest, filthiest track on Short n Sweet. Sabrina makes a very millenial-coded reference to the 2007 romantic comedy Juno, which deals with the topic of teenage pregnancy. Now, Miss Carpenter is quite a few years distanced from her own teenage era but let me not interfere with her fantasy. What's not to like? Quirky reference, good hooks and a fun sing-along vibe to the whole thing. Have you ever tried... this one? Ewan Chaos: "Another track with kinda crazy lyrics (complementary) like using JUNO as a metaphor." Invisibility: "Is this Clairo shade? Juna outsold. This is still great, though." Moonlight Nation: "There are elements I enjoy, and I totally understand why its breezy horny energy connected with many. But I fear it might be a tad too... heterosexual for me." 1
Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 HIGH SCORE 10 x 6 (MusicLoverDude, Julia Fox, wish, brokee, GreatestLoveofAll, Rev8) 9.5 x 2 (Invisibility, Ace Reject) LOW SCORE 3 x 1 (K$Ellie) 1 x 1 (Ken Lee) For the haters who thought Espresso was a fluke, and that Please x3 was all just hype... Taste must've been a bitter one to swallow! The hat trick of hits, the moment we knew she was about have a monster era 4real4real. Supported by a killer video with fellow it-girl Jenna Ortega, Taste launched alongside the Short n Sweet album and saw the meteoric rise... keep on rising! Seems that nothing could put a stop to Sabrina's 2024 domination and with this hit she was able to launch a huge sell-out tour too. A popstar is born. All that, and it's just a very nice pop song~ Ewan Chaos: "Not my absolute favorite on the album, but a perfect 3rd single/single tied to the album launch. Bright, live instruments, sassy but not quite OTT in its lyrics." Ken Lee: "Underwhelming, Gross." Invisibility: "Near perfect sunshine pop. The drums, Sabrina in top form, memorable hooks. A hit!" Moonlight Nation: "Still obsessed with this groovy pop rock production! It's an extremely petty song and Sabrina fully owns up to it." 2
Curaga Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Juno was the non-single that stood out to me on my first listen. It's so catchy!
Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 dddd; I don't care if no one shows up today I'm NOT waiting for the server to work again for this. Y'all can catch up after if you're not here.
Curaga Posted January 24 Posted January 24 It's really been awful Makes me wanna back out of doing the 2024 odds and ends rate Ace proposed
Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 11 x 1 @BowWow HIGH SCORE 10 x 5 (MusicLoverDudem Julia Fox, brokee, Frappucino, jacklovesyou1) 9.5 x 2 (kimberly, GreatestLoveofAll) LOW SCORE 4 x 1 (redsing707) 3 x 1 (Meloetta Carey) I do love a bratty moment, and the chorus to Naked In Manhattan has Chappell demanding to be touched by a lover in a very impatient fashion. A good and quirky love song with just a slight touch of familiar cringe (complementary), I can see why this connected when so many other Midwest Princess tracks did not. Fun fact: this is the second track in the rate to reference Lana Del Rey. And also the second to reference Mean Girls. They're both shouted out in the same songs. Is that shade? Ewan Chaos: "She should have just ended the album here SMH!" Moonlight Nation: "An overlooked gem. I love how the pop culture references are woven throughout. The tension and anticipation of repressed feelings finally being explored for the first time is so well conveyed."
K$Ellie Posted January 24 Posted January 24 ooooh Sabrina don't make that face Naked In Manhattan is a big bop tho
Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 HIGH SCORE 10 x 5 (BowWow, Julia Fox, jacklovesyou1, Dark Miracles, Quicksand) 9.5 x 2 (Ace Reject, Rev8) LOW SCORE 6 x 6 (MusicLoverDude, brokee, Ewan Chaos, glitch, Saddy, redsing707) 4 x 1 (Terylee) A very decent pop tune! This one I think gets slightly overrated by non-stans for being one of the less challenging tracks from the record, but slightly underrated by stans for the exact same reason. You don't have to reinvent the wheel, sometimes a blissful bridge is enough to elevate your 8/10 song to a 9! Talk talk is just simple fun, Troye or no Troye. I think this might've been looked at as a potential single before Apple blew up? Maybe the solo version would've been put out or the remix with Troye done earlier? Who knows. It all worked out for the best. Meloetta Carey: "I always wanted Utada Hikaru, Rosalia or some other multilingual singer on the remix of this." Rev8: "I wish we Talked more about this one, we need to Talk Talk I wish we Talk Talk." Ewan Chaos: "I wish you'd cock cock wish you'd cock cock wish you'd just cock to me (remix outsold)." Moonlight Nation: "Much like "After Midnight" on Chappell's debut, it's definitely the safest "BRAT" track production-wise. But it's so well-crafted and I love the tension conveyed through the lyrics and Charli's delivery. Obligatory shout-out to the impeccable sequel/remix with Troye Sivan." 2
Curaga Posted January 24 Posted January 24 nnn every time I saw a comment saying Talk talk was their fav from brat, I was like, ohhhh so you're basic but it's cute
K$Ellie Posted January 24 Posted January 24 outlasted some other brat songs that should've made top 20
Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 HIGH SCORE 10 x 7 (BowWow, Rev8, Into The Void, Moonlight Nation, Graves, Meloetta Carey, MusicLoverDude) 9.5 x 1 (kimberly) LOW SCORE 4 x 1 (Dark Miracles) 1 x 1 (GraceRandolph) There was a moment in time when this was Chappel Roan's biggest hit. By now it's been leapfrogged by Hot To Go and Pink Pony Club, and left totally in the dust by Good Luck Babe, but what a weird time. I don't mind that! This is actually hella cute and grew on me a fuckton over the last year. The storytelling vibe of the verses pairs nicely with the sing-along chorus, making for a good old fashioned lesbian anthem. And dare I say the bridge is kind of Sabrina coded? I mean, the "wand and the rabbit" line? Brilliant! Meloetta Carey: "The lesbian niece of "Texas Hold 'Em"." Curaga: "Love some of the instrumental bits, but that's all lol." Ewan Chaos: "Drag queens really loved this song at the top of the year. One of the better ones on the albums, I'll say." Invisibility: "It really sounds like a million dollars and a #1 single." Moonlight Nation: "Fantastic chorus and an already iconic bridge. So many memorable and creative lyrics." 1
Ewan Chaos Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Genuinely have never seen anyone put Talk Talk higher than their bottom 5 on Brat, what the hell happened. I mean I love it but... so many songs left that should have been ahead of it. Naked in Manhattan, the best non-single from Midwest for sure. Good position. Red Wine is cute, maybe got a little too far. Sabrina getting knocked... ouch. Would be funny if Espresso still won though.
Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 HIGH SCORE 10 x 6 (kimberly, Julia Fox, Invisibility, brokee, 305, Frappucino) 9.5 x 1 (Rev8) LOW SCORE 4.1 x 1 (Curaga) 4 x 1 (Saddy) It... probably suffered from not having Lorde on this version. That said, I always found this to be a cracking tune. Charli has a sort of unique talent of distilling complex emotions and wild feelings into a pop song without sacrificing much of the melody or intent. It's like... the notes from her therapy session set to music without even a rewrite. Ok girl! A song that launched a thousand memes (as much of Brat did), the latest of which I saw it plastered over videos of Malenia Trump at the inauguration. Something tells me this is going to be evergreen, we're going to be seeing fancams of this song for a while. I'm here for that, sorry to the haters. Curaga: "I used to really dislike this one sonically, but somehow it became a 10 when she put Lorde on it." Ewan Chaos: "Even though the remix is one of the "only adds lyrics" remix, it changes this song sooo much and is way better." Invisibility: "Amazing in either iteration... Women's stories matter, they just do!" Moonlight Nation: "Unlike "Guess", I appreciate the solo version for serving as a precursor to what the remix would eventually become, so I feel it still has its place alongside it, with Charli's second verse being rather underappreciated. But yeah, the remix with Lorde truly elevated the composition to a new, powerful level."
Ewan Chaos Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Yeah, this would have easily been in the top 10 if it was the Lorde version. Actually, both this and Talk Talk for me are songs that are generally in the lower end of the album for me whereas their remix versions are kinda my favorites from the remix album. It does feel a bit funny saying that with GSC's remix only adding Lorde's lyrics, but wow they really do just get me so emotional any time I hear it. Not to take away TOO much from what Charli brought to the original! And no offense, if you thought this was about Marina, you need to return to school 1
Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 11 x 2 @Into The Void & @Dark Miracles HIGH SCORE 10 x 5 (kimberly, Julia Fox, GreatestLoveofAll, jacklovesyou1, MusicLoverDude) 9 x 5 (Invisibility, brokee, Graves, makeawish, Terylee) LOW SCORE 3 x 1 (redsing707) 0 x 1 (Meloetta Carey) Poor Sabrina! Down to just one song left! How long can that Espresso stay fresh for? Bed Chem tho? It's the current single from Short n Sweet, though truth be told its been destroying charts even since it was an album track. As if it wasn't clear already was an imperial era this was for her, this was outcharting singles from the other ladies here long before her label sent it to the vinyl plant. It just connected with people from the get-go. Something about the slow-jam, sensual chorus, and the fun, flirting lyrics is just very pleasing to the ears. Sabrina may have a formula for her music, but it clearly works and I, personally, am a fan. More thirst trap soundtracks and less ballads next time, babe! Meloetta Carey: "Reminds me of Janet's "Come Back to Me", another song I don't really enjoy." Ewan Chaos: "Another one that grew on me, didn't dislike it but it stood out a lot more on further listens." Invisibility: "It's both fresh linen sheets and a lounge by the pool. Extremely breezy and it just invites you into its sonic world." Moonlight Nation: "I love everything about the song... except the bridge, which feels a bit underwhelming and phoned in compared to the rest. This late 90s R&B sound gets me every time." 1
Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 11 x 1 @MP2K HIGH SCORE 10 x 6 (Dark Miracles, Julia Fox, wish, Ewan Chaos, GraceRandolph, redsing707) 9.5 x 2 (kimberly, Rev8) LOW SCORE 3 x 2 (jacklovesyou1, glitch) 0 x 1 (Invisibility) Charli turns her family issues and generational trauma into one of the catchiest pop songs of the year. Crazy. Perhaps the most lyrically poignant moment on Brat is set to retro videogame synths and a bouncy backing track. Dare I drop the g-word again? Genius. I love this song, like... what a ******* crazy bop. A bonus kii at the people who were trying their hardest to mishear airport as apple. Worms! I dunno if Apple even counts as a proper single, it was just kind of an album track that blew up due to TikTok right? But the line between album track and single is so blurred in the streaming era, so who cares? It's undoubtedly one of the bigger songs in the rate. Rev8: "The fact that the remix is also pretty good!" Invisibility: "Top 10 most annoying moments of 2024 with that tiktok dance. Regarding the song, it's so advert sounding and not fun unlike 95% of the rest of the album." Moonlight Nation: "A well-crafted pop song tackling a complex subject rarely discussed in mainstream music. I'm not surprised it ended up going viral." 1 1
Ewan Chaos Posted January 24 Posted January 24 I was always an Apple top 5 of the album truther when the album came out & before it went viral!!11!!1!!! Great sing. Wasn't sure if this would chart higher than 360 or not... interesting.
Curaga Posted January 24 Posted January 24 It would be a kii if Sabrina missed the top 10, but I gave Espresso a great score anyway—it deserves tbh. 1 minute ago, Graves said: mishear airport as apple omg, I remember thinking this on 1st/2nd listen I was like, "Airport??? Oh wait, the songs called Apple... She was saying Apple, duh!"
Graves Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 HIGH SCORE 10 x 6 (Dark Miracles, Ewan Chaos, redsing707, Meloetta Carey, Into The Void, MusicLoverDude) 9.5 x 2 (Rev8, makeawish) LOW SCORE 5 x 1 (Terylee) 3 x 1 (glitch) I know some of you girls hate it for being a bit basic ( @glitch ) but who really gives a damn when it bops this well? Tinashe does a lot of sounds really well, that's why she's the most underrated popstar of the century of course, but I do love hearing her get all braggadocios on a song! We all love a tell-off anthem to a no good ex-partner, the bible of No Scrubs is a gay favorite for a reason, and Tinashe adds another jewel to the crown with No Broke Boys. Ex on the line... Just as I suspected, No one really gets over me. I'm unaffected~ Ewan Chaos: "This is a party anthem." Moonlight Nation: "It's so fun! I genuinely think Tinashe could have kept her renewed momentum going had she released this as "Nasty" 's follow-up over "Getting No Sleep". It feels like "2 On" 's spiritual sister while very much standing out on its own merits." 1
