Most ludicrous sales claims?

Featured Replies

What are the most inflated sales claims that do not line up with reality AT ALL?

:clack:

I'll start: that one Greek singer Madonna stans would parade as having sold 150M records to drag Mariah. :deadbanana4:

Also, I love Kylie, but that 80M records figure is ridiculously inflated. She sold 50M to 60M at best. (EDIT: I did the math and it's actually 62M. Slay!)

And this is not a dig at Thriller (since it's literally the best-selling album of all time :dies:), but it did NOT sell 100M+ copies.

Spoiler

People drag Chartmasters, but they did bring some sense into chart discussions. Stans and labels would just pull numbers out of their ass, it's crazy.

I know most of her sales are true but Celine's sales feel kinda fake now because she is not as relevant today as the other vocal divas of the 90s.

this is not trueee, she's totally as relevant as Whitney or Mariah.

This is wrong, Kylie has actually sold 1 billion records including over 50 million from Skirt alone.

Her streaming numbers are lower. I never said she wasn't big just smaller than her sales seem to point out which is what this thread is about.

Celine's biggest track on spotify is 550million but the others are between 100 and 200 million

Whitney has almost 4 with more than 500 million. I wanna dance 1.2 billion

Mariah has 5 with more than 400 million. AIWFCIY 1.8 billion

You show respect to Nana Mouskouri :fish2: Far more successful and talented than 99.999999% of the people we discuss in this forum.

OT: anything that adds streaming to real sales stats.

Not any related to ABBA. Their labels have been accurately keeping track of their record sales since debut.

K-pop Stan's back in the day counting 5 cent digital downloads as album sales hyper inflating their favs sales numbers.

:rip: he didnt sell no 1.5B record sales please. thats virtually impossible.

The RIAA deep state keeps hiding ROL, KM94, IP, Fever and BL's diamond plaques, so true bestie.

That Little Mix 50million records sold claim... I mean.... WHERE?...

Also to be fair, the Spice Girls' own 100million claim...

Ladies, lets be honest pls

Why is it impossible? Local, red neck hillbilly Morgan Wallen has over 120 million certified units in one country alone in less than two years. Not a stretch to think that one of the biggest artists of all time has sold ~15x more than that measly stat

If they mean total units and equivalents, I'd believe it.

they mean total units but acts like Madonna only have 350-400M. I doubt MJ is 3-4 times bigger

cause like how :rip: he peaked when the world had like 4.5B population and a lot of them didn't have music industries or western music was illegal. it's a ridiculous claim.

Garth Brooks sales certification.. Did he really sell that much albums in the 90s?

I doubt they're claiming all of those record sales occurred during his peak only.

Don't forget he had a second peak when he died

He did, but most of his albums were double albums, meaning the certification is doubled.

Per Chartmasters (whose owner is a literal MJ stan :dies:):

  • Albums: 182,600,000
  • GHs + other LPs: 101,997,000
  • Physical singles: 79,350,000
  • Digital singles: 79,990,000
  • Total: 443,937,000

If we were to assume CM is overly conservative and decide to multiply that figure by 1.25, it's still "only" 554M records sold. You are not getting 1B "records sold" from streams.

Monica supposedly having a total of 30 million records sold worldwide when her best selling album only did 5 million:suburban:

I love me a little K-pop bop but it's so obvious that a lot of those group's sales are inflated (see BigBang, 2NE1, Girls Generation, etc):suburban:
