1) I feel like users don't really know what "critically panned" means. I guess it depends on your definition, but if an album is in the yellow or green on Metacritic, it means the album either received mixed and favorable reviews (or even critical acclaim) respectively. Panned means to criticize severely. An album getting a green 61 score is not the definition of being criticized severely. 

 

2) For an album to receive critical acclaim, it has to have at least an 81 on Metacritic. 

 

I feel like users throw the words "critically panned" and "critical acclaim" very loosely on here when there's criteria for those terms (although, I guess it can be argued those terms can be based on other metrics). 

 

3) If a song and/or album reaches platinum status, I wouldn't consider that a flop. An underperformance? Sure. But if you generated at least a million copies/streams, how is that not a success? 

 

I'd be open to if any of these points need some fine-tuning, and I'm curious if there's other objective criteria ATRLers get wrong about music.

People usually over/underestimate the wrong people to benefit their own fave

"I'm not familiar with ___ artist/band/song so clearly they're not an icon/it's not a classic." Or maybe you just don't know as much about music as you like to think.

That people somehow care about "solo" sh+t and stuff like that.

I agree with you. There's a couple of albums ATRL considers "panned" that in reality outacclaims beloved albums.

Lots of sales = good music

A song has to jump through so many hoops to be considered a real hit on here. A hit song that receives any kind of promotion isn't "organic" and therefore doesn't count. It also doesn't count if it's not solo, if it's from a movie soundtrack and not your own album, and if it didn't make enough "impact" (whatever that means), etc. 

That songwriting is only about writing the lyrics

Conflating music relevancy with touring gross stats especially when it comes to tours that don't extend beyond US/Europe.

 

Fast beat doesn't mean a song is good.

1. The word “global.” Stans call any song that completely bombed in the US but went #1 on a former USSR state with less than a 4 million population’s radio airplay chart “global”.

2. “No promo.” It is 2023, promotion is not what it used to be. Stans excuse their faves song for flopping because it had “no promo” when like no smash song these days has any promo by those same standards.

 

 

And I disagree with your first 2 points. That logic was sound before but in the poptimism era when everyone and their mom is getting +80 scores, a mixed album is really anything below a 75. Panned below 65.
