So I‘m doing a presentation in school about hyperpop and I‘d like to use a few songs (preferably with video) as example for the sound, aesthetic and lyrical content of the genre. I have a few characteristic songs in mind but would love to hear ATRLs thoughts.  It‘d also be great to have ones from multiple time periods to showcase the evolution of the genre.

Those are some good ideas! Would you say Nadia Oh can be counted as kind of pre-historic origin for hyperpop or was it more her own thing?

Oh yeah, I would say that Nadia Oh and generally electropop of late 00s-early 10s was a precursor to hyperpop. I would also mention MAYA by M.I.A and maybe Treats by Sleigh Bells

In all honesty if we are talking origins this is probably the starting point

 

 

BIPP (along with everything else from Product) is what put SOPHIE on the map.

 

Career Boy by Dorian Electra is a good example of how subversive the genre is- leaning into shiny, uncanny valley pop elements (a stereotypically commercial and female-associated genre) for a song critiquing corporate culture and masculinity. 

 

Unholy is the biggest breakthrough of the genre into the mainstream so far (the percussion and parts of the vocal production are in many ways classic hyperpop). 

 

You could use nightcore as a major example of a precursor to the genre

If you want them to hear QUALITY then do these

If anyone cares I’ve included snippets of Beautiful by A.G. Cook & Faceshopping by SOPHIE to demonstrate characteristic sounds as well as snippets of Boy’s A Liar & Savage to showcase hyperpop’s influence in todays pop culture. I’ll finish the presentation by playing Vroom Vroom mv as the breakthrough Hyperpop song. <3
