When does a song become a "throwback"?

Featured Replies

When is a song old enough to be considered a throwback? No by Megan Trainor came on the radio today and someone called it a throwback. Personally, I would say 10 years. I don't think No by Megan Trainor is old enough to be called a throwback just yet, but maybe I'm wrong.

What do you guys think?

Depends. I feel like when the song perfectly encapsulates the time of release. True classic hits dont really hold much of a nostalgic sense if it still sounds fresh. I'd consider Bad Guy by billie a early 2019s throwback for example :thing:

Songs that are semi-forgotten but were big for their time and represent the era

Like Taio Cruz’ discography

i think that if its a big hit from more than three years ago id call it a throwback or if the song sounds aged like most of the mid 10s edm trend

Songs that are semi-forgotten but were big for their time and represent the era

Like Cher Lloyd’s discography

Songs that are forgotten but not forgotten. Like for example, you won't hear or see people discuss these songs (like how we discuss hits like Toxic or Teenage Dream) but when such songs plays, everyone remembers the song, has a memory attached with it and it reminds them of the era that the song came out. So that's what I think a throwback is. Some examples could be Timber, Despacito or Break Your Heart.

3 years. Like I would say thank u next is a throwback, good 4 u is not

Whenever you're able to relate a song to a specific period in your past that you're nostalgic for. So music from 2016 definitely counts. Even songs from 2019 like 7 Rings and Old Town Road make me feel nostalgic enough to call them 'throwbacks'
