should the Grammys change their rules?

Featured Replies

if you have never been nominated in the big 4 as a main artist (album, record or a part of a group in bna) you can still be nominated for best new artist...

Artists like cardi b, gaga etc. missed theirs imo rightful nom and win for some rules that should be updated. this year most noms in the category I haven't even heard of once...

i think they consider that if an artist has been nominated before then that means that they have already achived their breakthrough even if theyre not in the peak. tbh that rules doesnt seem that bad for me even if sometimes some great acts are ineligible because of it, like gaga and cardis cases

They should just get rid of the BNA category. It’s a joke with the constant rule changing and bending.

Best New Artist should be cancelled, we do NOT award artists in any other category for being an artist, but rather SPECIFIC WORKS. It should be Best Debut Album or EP

basically this

Just get rid of that category. We don’t have a Best New Director Oscar.

Didn't Meghan Trainor win BNA the year after she got nominated for ROTY and SOTY for "All About That Bass"?

:cm:

What I think about the Grammys is that they should reduce the awards and make more difficult to get them. Less categories could make them Oscar's alike and make them more important again.

And more variety of voters, that could surprise us a little more with the winners.

It's the things I would change to make then more relevant.

BNA should not be considered a Big 4 awards. Like it's nowhere near as big as ROTY or SOTY or AOTY :deadbanana2:

Yup.  And Ed Sheeran also got a BNA nomination the year after he got nominated for SOTY for "The A-Team."  I believe that under the Gaga rule (which was created after the outrage for her BNA snub), you had to have won a Grammy to be ineligible -- not just one of the big 4 (what made Gaga ineligible was "Just Dance" being nominated for Best Dance Recording in 2009).

That said, this isn't the rule anymore.  Now ANY Grammy nomination makes you ineligible, unless you hadn't yet released the minimum 5 singles or 1 album required for a BNA nomination.  So basically, if I released 4 singles during this eligibility year (2021-2022) and one of them got a random Rock or ROTY nomination, I'd still be eligible for BNA next year if my 5th single (or first full album) comes out during the 2022-2023 eligibility year.

In fact, if I don't get any Grammy nominations after hitting the 5 singles/1 album threshold, I can (in theory) continue to be submitted to BNA by my label -- until the Grammy screening committee decides I'm not BNA-eligible anymore (they removed the maximum limit as of this year's Grammys).

And to make things more complicated: Nominated featured artists and collaborators in nominated albums (who aren't the main artist) have a similar kind of exception.  As long as they didn't win that nomination and have released the minimum required singles/albums, they're eligible for BNA.  It's all so messy now :rip:
