I remember Impossible by Shontelle was all over the radio during the summer the year it was released. Especially impressive since ballads and r&b music was dead at the time and all radio played was dance pop

The definition of ballad is broader than a downtempo without a beat. Wide Awake might not be an *obvious* ballad but it's certainly not your typical summer song either.

Britney's Everytime? I think it was released right when the summer started.

 

Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" was almost the song of the summer in 2014.
