Rihanna, beyonce, nicki minaj, christina and many others have been on big features. How much money does a big hit feature give u?

 

For example does Christina make more money from Moves Like Jagger which sold over 30 million worldwide or from Feel This Moment which she has writing credits for and became a big hit but nowhere near the level of moves like jagger. 

 

 

Considering MLJ is a solo female song Xtina has probably made a lot of money 

Idk but there’s been a trend recently where there’s been more artists sharing lead credits rather than being a feature (e.g. “Lady Gaga with Ariana Grande”, “Doja Cat & The Weeknd”, “Megan Thee Stallion & Dua Lipa”), so I suspect a lot of artists have clocked on that they weren’t getting enough income from being features, and sometimes demand they are made a lead artist if they’re gonna be on the song.

 

It’s especially obvious when on an album, one artist is a feature and another has lead credits. E.g. on Doja’s last album, Ariana is a feature on “I Don’t Do Drugs”, but You Right is credited as “Doja Cat & The Weeknd”. Why the difference? The Weeknd must’ve insisted he was made a lead artist otherwise he wouldn’t do the song.

We don’t know the particulars that would be in the legal contracts. After the label and distributions collect their post-tax portion, typically the producer may have taken a one-off fee, and then the rest of the fees get split between all the songwriters. If you have 3 songwriters it doesn’t equate to 33% each, after taking the relevant aforementioned fees off. There’s a pre-determined ratio, and artists have to “fight” if they believe they significantly contributed to a song to receive royalties, and not just a one-off feature pay.

Supposedly Nicki gets $500K for a feature so it really depends on the artist's popularity, I wouldn’t be surprised if Beyoncé's is even more

beyonce usually demands to be on the song of her choice (usually already successful songs) so i guess she gets songwriting credits instead of quick little check

It depends. Some artists charge a flat fee for their features and don't get royalties (if they don't have producing/songwriting credits). Those artists who do have credits in the song, aside from their voice being on it, will get the % of rights breakdown that was submitted to the PRO.

BMI says it controls 45% and ASCAP 22.5%, since on ASCAP the only songwriter credited is Dua, then Dua would allegedly have 22.5% of the songwriting credit, the three songwriters from BMI split the 45% that pops up there, we don't really know how they split it. The % missing (33.5%) belongs to Stephen Kozmeniuk, and potentially the other two ASCAP songwriters that don't show up on ASCAP for whatever reason.

 

In terms of publishers, two BMI publishers are listed Hot Girl Music which I presume is Meg's publisher and Songs of Universal Music Group because Meg is signed to them. BMI only controls 6.25% of the publishing rights tho. I can't find Dua's publisher. ASCAP doesn't have any publishers listed, and she's not with Warner Chappell, Kobalt, or Universal, which are the usual big publishers. So 

 

But that's usually what the components are. Optional: flat fee, + songwriting % + publishing % and it all depends on how much % the artist has.

@professor2000 can maybe clarify better but I think it has to do with certain teams / labels and how much push they're investing into the song

Unfortunately D.M.F malfunctioned yesterday after somebody spilled water onto him and he admitted that Christina was in fact not a member of Maroon 5 and was just a feature. 

 

 

 

Nicki always bragging in her songs about getting 500k for a feat or something, so maybe around that?

i've always thought this was because of streaming. on Spotify if you're just a feature instead of a co-lead, the song doesn't show up in your page as a single (it's on the "Appears On" section)

i've noticed that it's been changing recently but it's probably the default setting.

i know y'all love to make fun of Xtina being an feature artist but Move's Like Jagger and Feel This Moment (her most recent hits) are not actually on her page because she's a feature and it doesn't contribute to her Monthly listeners or her total streams. meanwhile Say Something (which is probably more of a feature than Feel This Moment) does because she's credited as a co-lead.

Yeah, this has always been my understanding of it.  And as a result of who’s label is pushing the single, clearly they want their artist to get a lead credit on streaming, Billboard, etc.   
 

In terms of how much/when artists get paid, it all varies.  Some artists do features for free as a favor.  Some take a larger lump sum up front (especially in cases where they’re collabing with someone who’s new), some ppl wait to get paid via royalties (obviously not ideal).  All depends.  
 

And some artists charge different artists different prices.  Nicki would charge Doja more than BIA, etc.  So it’s hard to give a specific number.
