I’ve been drifting between a few concepts and I think I’ll probably end up changing artists if my current one sticks.Β

Anyone got any advice on making more unique/interesting lyrics from a pop perspective? I feel like I’m always used to simplifying and generalising lyrics because I know they sometimes don’t have to be the forefront of the song (sometimes melody or production takes centre stage, you try and fit a rhyme to a certain rhythm etc) but It has definitely rubbed off and turned into a bad habit.

I would say listen to more music where lyrics are at the forefront, or try reading some poetry also. Just try to consume more thoughtful writing and this could help you channel more unique lyricism in your own writing., I think.

Β

The thing is there's nothing wrong with wanting to be a pop writer and to create songs with simplistic lyrics. What is definitely worth remembering though is that just because something is a pop song doesn't mean it has to have basic lyrics; a pop song can be equally as poetic as any other. It's always very important to remember that there are no rules in music, you can write absolutely anything you want to, and this also means that you don't necessarily have to try and make yourself fit into the box that a lot of pop music is in.

Β

I think experience is a key thing too, trying different styles and finding what works best for you and where your own unique writing and lyrical voice shine. Hopefully this game and the challenges that we will present can help with this!Β :bird:

As someone that likes to write poppier lyrics, two things I found that helped me are taking one "simple" concept and seeing how far you can take that idea with metaphors and wordplay, and either avoiding "cliche" lines, or transforming that cliche into something that sounds a bit more unique, which could be done by putting the cliche into a different context, surrounding it with language that makes it feel less cliched, etc.

Β

I could elaborate on either of these if needed!

Thank you @fountainand @HugΒ some solid advice I can use for next time!

Rearranged some lines of my song with Lana and now I think it’s ready to come out! It’s finished!

Was she easy to work with? Or was it a ride?

She was actually really cool and we have so much in common tbh she just shared a blunt with me and then we do some heroin after we realized we have a lot of dicks in common so we just reviewed them and realized we have a very similar taste lol she’s so cute and down to earth, maybe a little bit to shy at first but she seems to be like that and then she’s wild -in a good way- also she seems to be in a very good place tbh and that made me so happy of course x she read the first 10 pages of my book and she of course said it was a masterpiece if she say so herself and myself xΒ

I think I'm almost done.. a little clunky, and longer than what I usually write, but I definitely think it's something my artist would actually pick up (if it was a bit more polished).

I love / hate when you start writing one thing and then it turns into another. What started as an effort to write about empty nest syndrome is now a song about a woman who only stayed in an unhappy marriage β€œfor the kids” and is now on the cusp of divorce because they’re all grown up. It’s wild how a song can change completely midway through the writing process.Β
Β

Needless to say, recent graduate Dr. Swift will not be recording a song about having college aged children, so I’m changing my artist to Faith Hill.Β

My reach most definitely exceeded my grasp choosing Prince but I did have fun and I got something submitted so I am content with that.

Interesting :eek:Β tbh just based off the sound of it I feel like it still could’ve fit Taylor since she sometimes tends to do those storytelling songs that are removed from herself, but I understand the switch to Faith gives it more of a personal layer, looking forward to reading itΒ :gaycat4:

To be honest picking a legend is tricky since they have such a high status it creates a lot of pressure, but also in a challenge like this why not go all out and pick somebody like that and push yourself? I think it’s a commendable choice and I’m glad you had fun with itΒ :bird:
