Usually I'd have...something by now, but I don't even like the few semblances of ideas I had.

Welcome, writers! It’s time for the debut season of ATRL’s newest tournament Golden Hit to come to a close. :weeps:
From the elements to the studio, from word count to queer pride, and from culture and history to media, oh my!
Our list of past challenges forms quite a remarkable array, so how could we end the season any other way?

Β

Without further ado, let me introduce you all to the sixth and final round of the season...

unknown.png

Β

This is a brand new challenge for Golden Hit... or is it? Ultimately, the choice is yours... or should I say, was yours. But what’s the choice, I hear you ask? Over the past five weeks you have been shaping your own challenge, tailored exclusively to you, without even realizing it! Your submissions during the tournament thus far will have a great impact on your next submission... just how they impact your final song is up to you, however. The choice? All or Nothing.
Β

All
If you choose All, your final song must be linked to each of your prior submissions throughout Golden Hit in some way. It can be as major or as minor of a link as you desire, however there must be some connection to each and every one of your prior entries. It may be a shared motif, or a reference to a specific lyric. Perhaps a borrowed rhyme scheme, or an interpolated song title. Your song doesn’t necessarily have to adhere to the specifics of the individual challenges, however should you wish to incorporate any other challenge elements, that may be a suitable link! Originality will be rewarded, and it is important that your song must stand alone in its own right, yet still feel like a fitting centerpiece to the Golden Hit project you’ve been crafting all season.Β All of your individual connections to your prior songs must be included in the other information section.
Β

Nothing
Alternatively, if you choose Nothing, your final song must be completely unique from any of your prior submissions throughout Golden Hit. We don’t wish to see any overlapping themes, repurposed song structures and rhyme schemes, or concepts previously explored during your time in this tournament. Of course, not every single word has to be something you haven’t used beforeβ€”think of this more as a β€œfree round” option, with a heightened focus on exploring new styles, concepts, themes, and language that you wouldn’t typically utilize. This is an opportunity to take a risk and try something entirely new for you, and step out of your comfort zone, while still displaying strong songwriting techniques forming a lyrically enthralling experience for the reader.Β A summary of how this differs from your prior songs must be included in the other information section.
Β

Now you know the stakes... what will you choose? All or Nothing?
Β

Songs due via Google Form submission by Thu. Jun 23, 11:59PM EST

Β

The top three submissions will earn their writers a Hit Token, so make sure to submit for your chance at one of those. Due to this being the final round, requests for token embossment will be taken from all writers during submission, as to have them presented during the final results show. As always, if you have not submitted during Golden Hit thus far, that's fine! Just submit an entry and we'll add you to the sign-ups list, however you would need to complete the Nothing component of the challenge by default.

Β

Finally, @fountain, @Element, and I wish to thank you all once again for making this tournament a success.
We hope you have enjoyed the experience as much as we have, and wish you all the best in the finale!

I'm gonna spiral into a panic thinking about what to do for this challenge when it ultimately doesn't matter ?‍♂️?‍♂️?‍♂️

Posted

Convincing myself that sending something is better than nothing even if that something would result in me embarrassing myself

Posted

It'd be very artpop of me to go the "nothing" route and then just plagiarize something because I've yet to plagiarize anything.

This horrid site has not been letting me post all day :biblionny:

In terms of averages? I guess to a degree it doesn’t matter as much since if you’ve submitted every round up until now, your average is the most secure that it can be. But honestly not to give too much away but a lot of the overall averages are still very close, this final round is still really going to impact and ultimately decide things for sure, so if you care about that kinda thing it’s definitely better to at least submitΒ somethingΒ as opposed to nothing. We had a few people drop over 10 places in the ranking for not submitting last round :chick3:

I guess I meant more in that I'm putting more stock into this game than I probably should.

Β

I always have a problem where I value my output based off how well it's received by others, rather than how much I enjoyed making it and what it means to me personally. I get too deep into my own head and panic when I really should just relax and just...make something I'm happy with, whether it really fits the challenge or not. If I make something I like, that should be more meaningful than any potential I have to "win" the competition. I just can't escape the mentality that what other people think is more important.

fountain and I definitely don't see writing tournaments as just a game, which is part of the reason why we decided to bring back the non-elimination format rather than a more traditional X eliminations per week format. Even insinuating someone isn't good enough to submit for the remainder of a season is honestly just not an idea we support anymore, and I think some of the "late bloomers" this season are testament to the fact that some people respond to certain challenges better than others and some just have off weeks.Β There was a lot of discussion between us before the season began and a lot of discussion over the past few weeks about what we would ideally like to see happen with the future of the ATRL songwriting community, and a lot of things have changed (for the better!) as a result of the Golden Hit experience I would say.

Β

More related to your post: while I think adhering to the challenge prompts is part of the fun of these types of tournaments, producing something you personally are happy with is of course the most important. You've proven it is indeed possible to have both though (see: "Maid of Windemere"). You usually have five days to complete the challenge and often submit well before the deadline is up. I'm not sure what your creative process is like exactly, but if you start with something you're really passionate about that fits the challenge criteria, you can't really go wrong, even if the results aren't always what you expect.

Β

I definitely don't think my opinion is any more important that anyone's about their own song. I'm just here to share my thoughts, and if they can be helpful in some way, fantastic! If they're not needed, then I'm just happy to have been allowed to read someone's art.

May or may not have just scalped my own skull with a couplet I just wrote. :jonny5:

Omg.. finally my reply box is back. The site really doesn’t want me to post with you!

Β

To be honest that’s a very relatable experience, and I think after being a part of PH for so long it is only natural; from that game, our writing has subconsciously been linked to this kind of judgement and fear of elimination. Now that’s not to say it was all bad, but I definitely think that’s a part out it, and ultimately writing and sharing it is definitely something that puts you out of your comfort zone, leading to feelings like this! I certainly have felt similar when I’ve played in the past. The good thing though, now that we are focusing on Golden Hit I hope that this can be something that is moved away from, and that we can more or less write just because we love writing! That’s really why we don’t even bring up or talk about the averages too much, it’s certainly an aspect of the game, but a very unimportant one in the grand scheme. The main goal here is to explore your writing and embrace your creativity in any way you want, so really I would empower you to try and go against these feelings as best as you can and like you say, the only concern should be whether YOU like what you’ve created or not. Ultimately Aurora and I are just people and our reviews are just our opinions and not actually anything that reflects you as a writer, or even your song as a whole. There’s lots of outside factors that play a part here that might be overlooked: how inspired you are at the time and what is going on in your life, how receptive the judges are at the time and what is also going on in their lives, how well you click with the challenge itself, how much free time or energy you have, all the subjectivity that goes into β€œjudging” itself, etc., which in the end should be a reminder that all of this doesn’t dictate anything about you as a writer or your lyrics and that you should just do what you want, especially now that there is a space like this to do it . Hopefully though with Golden Hit we can help encourage more freedom and overall a lighter place to get together and write… that was our intention anyway in bringing this to life, and my original hope ever since that first non elimination season five years ago. I’ve actually always said that I wanted to play in a season like this because I wanted to be able to experience that freedom for myself, but obviously after 10.5 another never happened until now, and I find myself in this role again… but honestly I still look forward to it and want to play at some point in the future so I can embrace these positive aspects myself. I hope that you can feel them to some degree, too, and not just the pressure.Β :chick3:

Yeah just motivation in general, whenever I get the energy or spark of creativity to do something I have to act on it asap or my drive just goes out the window. Maybe it’s partly the idea too because like I can conceptualise in my head what I want it to be about but can’t even get a line downΒ :dies:

I guess I can relate to this too, my creativity kind of exists in bursts as well, and sometimes I just don’t have any motivation for it at all, but I think that it’s directly related to my energy levels in general. Would you say it’s similar for you?Β
Β

At least personally I feel like sometimes I need to just do nothing… lol, like some time to reset and just take it easy. Creative minds can be really exhausting, I know some people say you should try and write every day even if it’s bad or something - just to keep the muscle active - but I think I might disagree with that, at least for myself. Forcing myself to write something just doesn’t feel good, so I always encourage myself to take all the time that I can to feel ready. I guess it’s harder in a game that runs on a schedule, but I’d encourage everybody playing to have the same kind of viewpoint and be patient and give themselves all the time that they need instead of fretting about getting it done as soon as possible, use all the time that you have tbh. There’s still 2 days left which isn’t bad (plus, not to suggest anybody should do this, but we don’t exactly say no to entries past the deadline ), I’d say keep mentally exploring that idea you’ve got and hopefully you can find a path toward it which works; also, inspiration strikes sometimes in the most random moments, so you never know, it could hit whenever!Β :bird:
